About the role
THE ROLE
Reporting to the Grounds Horticulture Foreperson, this position will be responsible for maintaining and designing shrub beds on Surrey School sites. Your considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in horticultural work along with extensive knowledge of plant materials, fertilizers, integrated pest management, landscaping methods and sustainable design will make you an asset to the team. Leadership skills and training will be essential as you assist employees engaged in the maintenance and development of school grounds. Success in this position requires excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet multiple and competing deadlines, as well as responding to time-oriented emergencies.
This days-only position offers a shift of 7am-3pm, Monday to Friday.
TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITES:
- Plan, design, install, and maintain school district landscapes, including trees, shrubs, turf, naturalized areas, and garden beds.
- Perform routine and specialized horticultural maintenance such as pruning, planting, mulching, and soil conditioning.
- Implement and maintain strong weed management practices using non-chemical methods, including hand weeding, mechanical removal, mulching, edging, and cultural practices to suppress weed growth.
- Monitor overall plant and landscape health, identifying environmental stress, soil deficiencies, and maintenance needs.
- Develop and carry out seasonal planting and maintenance plans that align with district standards for safety, sustainability, and visual quality.
- Maintain soil health through soil testing, aeration, composting, and appropriate soil amendment practices.
- Operate and maintain a wide range of horticultural tools and equipment, including mowers, trimmers, aerators, and irrigation systems, ensuring safe and efficient use.
- Provide technical direction, guidance, and on-the-job training to ground staff, promoting best horticultural practices.
- Assist in supervising crews, assigning work, and ensuring tasks are completed to established standards and timelines.
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, district policies, and environmentally responsible practices.
- Assist in planning and sourcing plant materials, supplies, and equipment, contributing to budget awareness and cost-effective operations.
- Support school district initiatives related to sustainability, biodiversity, and environmentally friendly grounds management.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of horticulture, plant identification, local growing conditions, and landscape maintenance principles.
- Apply strong practical skills in pruning, planting, and non-chemical weed control techniques.
- Use sound judgment and problem-solving skills to assess site conditions and recommend improvements or corrective actions.
- Effectively organize, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks within deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with staff, supervisors, and school stakeholders.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding duties safely and effectively.
- Maintain a high level of attention to detail and pride in delivering safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing school grounds
** JOB REQUIREMENTS**
- A 2-year technical Diploma in Horticulture from a recognized college/institution or completion of a Landscape Horticulturalist Red Seal.
- A valid unrestricted Class 5 BC Driver’s license.
This is a unionized position that offers a 37.5-hour work week with an hourly wage rate of **$40.65, plus a liberal benefit package including Municipal Pension, health, vacation and sick benefits. **
