Operations and Real Estate Partnerships Division (OREP) is the largest shared service division at the University of Toronto, providing a wide range of services to the University and serving three campuses. OREP is responsible for several key portfolios within the University, including Information Technology Services, Facilities and Services, University Planning Design & Construction, and Spaces & Experiences. We strive to provide efficient and effective services that support the University’s mission of knowledge creation, educational program delivery and community service. OREP Financial Strategy and Services Department works closely with other departments, as well as internal and external stakeholders, to manage OREP’s financial resources, enhance operational efficiency, and improve financial management capacity. The Finance Department ensures compliance, provides strategic advice, enhances support for the decision-making process, manages risks, optimizes financial processes, adopts new technologies, improves existing systems, and promotes best practices.
Your Opportunity:
The Director of Financial Accounting and Controllership oversees AP, AR, Procurement, and Controllership functions, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency in financial operations. This role will report to the Executive Financial Officer and be part of the leadership team within the OREP Financial Strategy and Services Department.
This role manages the financial operation teams to provide services to OREP and departments, analyze financial data, drive process improvements, mitigate risks, and engage with stakeholders to support organizational goals and foster continuous development in the Hub and the departments.
Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
- A University degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Professional accounting designation required. MBA preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 10 years’ related experience, with a minimum five (5) years’ managerial experience overseeing AP, AR, procurement, and controllership functions.
- In-depth knowledge of accounting and/or financial principles, policies and procedures, preferably gained at a university or similar publicly funded institution.
- Expert knowledge of related accounting software; SAP experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in managing teams and multiple financial functions in a large organization.
- Proven track record of driving process improvements and implementing effective financial controls.
SKILLS:
- Superior analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong leadership skills, including the ability to manage organizational change.
- High level of integrity and results-orientation.
- Ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with financial and non-financial senior administrators throughout the university.
- Strong capability to thrive in new environments and embrace challenges with agility.
- Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, project management and decision-making skills.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative with emphasis on long-term strategic planning.
OTHER:
- The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to cultivate and sustain a high-performing team in a fast-paced environment, while fostering collaboration, ensuring high quality, and timely delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to think outside of the box, see the big picture and long-term implications and opportunities of proposed changes.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, including ability to bring diplomacy to difficult situations and to clearly organize and communicate financial information to non-financial individuals at all levels.
