Position Summary
The Community Health Worker (CHW) plays a vital role in supporting individuals and families in navigating health and social systems, accessing culturally safe care, and improving overall wellbeing. As a trusted member of the STEPS team, the CHW is instrumental in reducing barriers to care, promoting health equity, and fostering engagement with marginalized populations — with a focus on Indigenous people, women, children, and gender-diverse individuals. This position combines community outreach, digital communications, and administrative support in a dynamic, patient-centered environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Community Engagement & Outreach

Plan, coordinate, and support health promotion initiatives aligned with STEPS’ population health goals.

Serve as a liaison between patients, staff, and the broader community to foster trust, engagement, and awareness of services.

Create community-facing materials (e.g., newsletters, posters, event announcements) and take photos with appropriate consent.

Promote clinic programs and health resources through direct outreach and digital communications.

Develop, post, and manage digital content across social media platforms and the STEPS website.
2. Clinical and Administrative Support

Provide coverage and assistance at the front desk, including greeting patients, managing appointment scheduling, managing program schedules, answering phones, and supporting electronic medical record (EMR) functions.

Support referral coordination, document scanning, and general office administration. • Assist with meeting coordination, scheduling, and light executive administrative support (e.g., notetaking, filing, formatting documents, etc.).

Monitor clinic flow and contribute to creating a culturally safe, welcoming environment.

Maintain discretion and uphold confidentiality in all interactions and record keeping.
Qualifications
Education and Experience

Post-secondary education in community health, social services, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, training, and lived experience.

Experience working with underserved or marginalized communities is an asset.

Lived experience as a member of an equity-seeking group will be considered an asset. Required Competencies

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively —verbally and in writing — with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills; culturally responsive and trauma-informed approach.

High degree of initiative, organization, and follow-through.

Competence in managing competing priorities in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting.

Proficiency in MS Office Suite, MedAccess EMR, and web-based tools.

Familiarity with social media and website content management; basic graphic design skills are an asset.

Sound judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion. Working Conditions

This position is primarily based in-person on-site at STEPS North Shore CHC.

Flexibility is required to attend occasional early morning, evening, or weekend work requirements.

A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle are required.

A cell phone is required for work-related communication.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $22.00-$30.00 per hour

STEPS, a non-profit organization, is striving to create equal opportunity in the pursuit of study abroad for Indian students. Through personalized mentorship, workshops, and coaching all free of cost we empower underrepresented students to get admission to the top US & European universities.
STEPS program focus: 1 Indian Muslim Women: Pioneering support for Indian Muslim women, encouraging their representation in global education platforms.
2 First-Generation and Low-Income Students: Providing tailored assistance to first-generation and low-income students, enabling them to transcend socio-economic barriers.
- Students from Rural Background: Bridging the educational gap for students from rural India, equipping them with the resources to compete on an international level.
STEPS is co-founded by the brother-sister duo of Abdul Aleem and Rafia Khatoon. They both are first-generation graduates who strongly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to get a great education, no matter where they come from. Abdul is a Stanford grad who had offers of admission with scholarships from Harvard, UC Berkeley, and Columbia among other great universities. Rafia is starting her graduate studies at the University of Chicago as a quadrangle research scholar and has received admissions from other great schools like Oxford, LSE, and UCL.
They're on a mission – to help Indian students, especially those from underrepresented communities, follow their dreams and study at the best universities worldwide through STEPS.
