School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a dynamic and passionate educator at Mt. Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan, BC. Mt. Sentinel is a Grade 7-12 school, with a current enrolment of 285 students.

Job Description and Requirements:

We are looking for an innovative, creative and flexible teacher who can demonstrate a proficient understanding of the renewed BC curriculum, the new K-12 reporting policy, and School District 8, Kootenay Lake’s 2024 – 2029 Strategic Plan. The awarded applicant will be experienced in teaching in a multi-aged setting, fluent in assessment strategies that support learning, universal design for learning, technology integration and will strive to create an engaging, challenging, and supportive learning environment working with the Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies (Foods) and Home Economics and Culinary Arts Curriculums. The applicant will also have recent experience teaching in a middle and secondary school setting. Position Description:

The awarded applicant will teach MYP (Grade 7/8) Foods, Foods 9/10 and Foods 11/12 and will support our school meals program in a job share position on Thursdays and Fridays. As this is a job share position, the awarded applicant is expected to work in collaboration with the Foods teacher on partial leave. Depending on the final timetable build, this position may also include teaching French 7/8 as part of the MYP course elective rotation.

Educational Qualifications:

  • A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch

  • Bachelor of Teacher Education (middle or secondary preferred) with a major or minor or specialization in Foods Studies or other relevant area of ADST

  • Having experience working in the food industry is preferred if there is no major/minor specialization in ADST curriculum.

  • Current Food Safe certificate is preferred.

  • Recent successful experience teaching in a grade 7-12 setting.

  • Recent demonstrated successful experience teaching French would also be an asset.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and classroom management skills

  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of teaching and assessment strategies

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Experience with a variety of learning management systems

Required Competencies and Experience:

  1. Plan, using backward design and differentiation strategies, for curriculum that meets the needs, interests and abilities of a diverse range of learners.

  2. Create a mutually respectful classroom culture that ensures student involvement and engagement in the learning process and enables each student an opportunity to achieve learning outcomes through a variety of current instructional and self-regulation strategies.

  3. Collaborate with colleagues and the School Based Team, including the Learning Support Teacher, Aboriginal Education Teacher, Education Assistants, and Counsellor to ensure that students with learning and behavioral challenges are supported through adaptations, modifications, and differentiation as required in their IEPs

  4. Establish clear learning outcomes or key questions related to big ideas in the new curriculum for units and projects and clearly communicate these outcomes to students and parents.

  5. Develop assessment and evaluation strategies that align with the changed emphases in curriculum.

  6. Be conversant and have experience with current educational technologies and demonstrate a growth mindset for learning new tools and applications.

  7. Be cognizant of Indigenous worldviews and knowledge and establish positive, interdependent relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every student’s unique abilities.

  8. Familiarity with the Applied Design, Skills and Technologies (ADST) curriculum for Foods 7–12, including a readiness to create meaningful and engaging cross-curricular learning experiences for secondary students; this may include French 7/8 and support for the school meals program.

  9. Engage in ongoing professional learning and reflective practice aligned with both the school’s goals and individual professional growth objectives.
