About the role

JOB SUMMARY:

Reports to the Manager of Dining Experience, and is responsible for the planning, preparing, and/or directing the preparation of meals and catering according to the production schedule book.

The Cook is an integral member of the Menno Place team and is required to have a commitment to the vision, mission and values of Menno Place. In performing duties, the Cook will follow Menno Place policies and procedures ensuring the provision of Resident and Family Centred Care (RFCC) while safeguarding staff and residents.

This position requires teamwork, communication and cooperation. It is the expectation that the individual in this position contributes to a positive, safe working environment, takes instruction well and cooperates with their supervisor and co-workers. This person manages their time well and participates in continuous quality improvement of services provided.

DUTIES & FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans menus and develops texturized recipes according to the nutritional and therapeutic diet needs of the facility.
  • Plans preparation and cooking schedule to minimize time between completion of cooking and serving.
  • Prepares and/or directs the preparation of food and therapeutic diet items such as soups, sauces, salads, starches, meats, fish, poultry, vegetables and desserts by methods/procedures such as roasting, frying, grilling, steaming, poaching, boiling, baking, slicing, dicing, grinding, blending and rethermalization; tests food items for quality and checks/records temperature throughout preparation, service and storage to ensure high quality and safety.
  • Carves food items such as meat and poultry, and controls portioning of food items to ensure yield meets assigned quantity quotas.
  • Establishes and ensures maintenance of food rotation in storage in order to minimize spoilage and waste.
  • Estimates food, papers, and other supply requirements according to nutritional and therapeutic diet needs; orders and receives supplies as required; resolves discrepancies with suppliers.
  • Supervises designated staff by scheduling and coordinating work assignments, participates in employee performances evaluations and determining related training and orientation requirements.
  • Oversees and updates standards and procedures; ensures safety practices and procedures are adhered to.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience

  • Graduation from a recognized program in quantity cooking plus one years’ recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Possesses Food Safe Level 1 Certificate

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.

  • Is aware of their rights and responsibilities and follow all health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers, and residents.
  • Is alert to and promptly reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations to immediate supervisor. Does not operate or use faulty equipment.
  • Promptly reports personal injury to supervisor and seeks first aid as needed.
  • Participates in fire safety demonstrations and fire drills, and knows the facility fire and disaster plan.

Job Type: Casual

Pay: $27.31-$27.56 per hour
