About the role

Research Assistant I

The Spine Research Program, within the Trauma & Neurosurgery Research Department, is currently looking for a Research Assistant I. The primary role of the Research Assistant I includes providing essential assistance, organizational and administrative support to research projects. Key tasks involve screening study participants, obtaining consent, data collection and recording through surveys and in-depth interviews and adhering to established research protocols. Additional duties include, obtaining biological samples, processing data, labeling and shipping samples and study-related materials. Furthermore, the Research Assistant I will contribute to the funding and grant processes by supplying necessary information, ensuring the quality of documentation, and coordinating with internal and external partners.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Recruit study participants through various means, sometimes in collaboration with study team or staff at participating community organizations

Complete participant assessments through general clinical procedures

Collecting data via phone calls, interviews and entry of study related data

Screening data for study inclusion according to protocol

Interacting with various departments such as pharmacy, laboratories, medical records, etc.

Support the preparation of forms (e.g., reimbursement forms, REB applications, contract submission forms)

Present research related information, including written study reports when necessary

Assisting Investigators in the interpretation and implementation of study protocols

Assisting Investigators in the initiation of new research

Interacting with sponsoring agencies regarding requests for clarifications of data and/or assisting monitors during site visits

Represent St. Michael’s Hospital at protocol development and study initiation meetings

General office duties e.g. filing, faxing, mailings, courier services, photocopying, etc.

Ordering supplies and maintaining inventory

Limited processing of sample and data

Conducting literature searches and assisting grant application

May assist research team with manuscript and report writing, including writing abstracts for papers, conferences, and 1-page summaries; and the creation of endnote files

Qualifications:

Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in health science or life science field and 1 year of relevant experience

Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills.

Superior organizational skills to manage multiple projects in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.

Professionalism and self-motivation

Good personal and time/detail management skills

Able to work independently and as part of a team

Knowledge of anatomy, GCP regulation and guidelines

Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office and database

Experience with technical writing and grant application

Experience with a reference manager (i.e. EndNote, Zotero, etc.) is preferred
