The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Psychiatry, in partnership with Recovery Alberta, invites applications for academic/tenured track Academic Medicine and Health Service Program (AMHSP) positions at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full professor.

We are seeking psychiatrists with expertise in areas such as addictions, child-adolescent, forensic, community and/or geriatric psychiatry. Additional areas of high need include urban-rural partnerships, and novel collaborative care models. All candidates will be strongly interested in medical education and/or research.

We offer a robust residency training program in psychiatry, alongside Royal College-accredited subspecialty programs in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Geriatric Psychiatry. In addition to post-graduate residency training, the Department provides both pre-clinical and clinical teaching for core and elective experiences for undergraduate MD students. as a part of the MD Program with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

About Recovery Alberta and AMHSP

Recovery Alberta is the newly established provincial agency responsible for delivering addictions and mental health services across Alberta. As part of this system, the successful candidate will join a collaborative effort to meet clinical needs and enhance access to high-quality, patient-centered care. Our multi-disciplinary teams in the Edmonton Zone consisting of nursing, psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, social work, education, and speech-language pathology provide education and assistance for more than 1.4 million people in Edmonton and surrounding areas.

Unlike traditional academic positions, AMHSP positions are unique opportunities that allow for the development of a viable academic career in conjunction with a clinical career. AMHSP positions are ideally suited to clinicians who also value education, research, quality, and leadership as a part of their professional identity. Competitively funded protected time for education and/or research is embedded in all AMHSP positions.

Recovery Alberta and the University of Alberta jointly oversee the AMHSP. The candidate(s) selected for this position will be referred to the AMHSP Arrangement Management Committee to finalize their yearly individual service agreement, which the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the Department of Addiction and Mental Health, Recovery Alberta jointly approved.

Position Summary

The clinical component of these positions may include any of the above listed subspecialty areas, and collaborative development of services with, and for, primary care providers. These services will emphasize primary care that can reach rural populations, including indigenous communities. Consultative, urgent care, and emergency care services outside of large centres are also a priority. We are seeking motivated academic clinicians who are interested in direct care and who are also highly motivated in development of systems and team-based delivery of care to reach communities and families outside of large centres.

The successful candidate will actively participate in medical education and/or research. In addition to post-graduate residency training, the Department has commitments to education as a part of the MD Program with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, providing pre-clinical and clinical teaching for core and elective experiences for undergraduate MD students.

Remuneration

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the income scale of the six-step Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). Further details about this innovative funding plan are available on request.

Qualifications

Candidates must be certified or eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons as a Psychiatrist with subspecialty training and/or designation in child and adolescent psychiatry. Previous interest in and/or additional medical education and/or research training is considered an asset. The positions will allow up to 0.5 FTE for medical education or research; the remaining FTE will be clinical services with Recovery Alberta.
