About the role

Our Division & Communities

Foothills School Division (FSD) serves the learning needs of approximately 8000 students from preschool to grade 12. We operate 22 public schools, an online digital school, an alternative campus, and three colony schools. These are located in the towns of Okotoks, High River, and Diamond Valley, and the communities of Blackie, Cayley, Heritage Heights, Red Deer Lake, Longview, Millarville and Foothills County.

Transportation Services

Foothills School Division’s Transportation Services department is responsible for the repair and maintenance of approximately 100 school buses and other vehicles within the school division. Safety is our priority when supporting education through the transportation of our students.

The Role

The Automotive Service Operations Technician assists in supporting the safe and efficient operation of the Division’s transportation fleet. This hybrid position combines hands-on mechanical and maintenance work with administrative scheduling and coordination duties.

This opportunity is worth exploring for those who are interested in getting into the automotive field and are looking for hands-on experience to start your career and an eagerness to learn from experienced journeymen mechanics. Alternatively, for those wrapping up their careers who aren’t quite ready to leave the workforce but are looking for a change in pace to ease into a life transition.

Technical & Maintenance

  • Perform routine maintenance and lube services on school buses and fleet vehicles.
  • Assist licensed technicians with diagnostics, repairs, and inspections.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop and work areas.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored.
  • Support seasonal tire changes, fluid checks, and minor non-mechanical repairs.

Scheduling & Administrative

  • Coordinate and schedule vehicle maintenance and inspections in compliance with Alberta Transportation regulations.
  • Track service intervals and maintain accurate maintenance records using fleet management software.
  • Communicate with drivers and staff to minimize service disruptions.
  • Assist with parts ordering and inventory control.
  • Support compliance with safety protocols and documentation standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary training in automotive service is an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Valid Class 1 with Air endorsement OR Class 2 with “S” endorsement preferred or willingness to obtain
  • 1 - 3 years of experience in a mechanical shop environment or similar role.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and willingness to learn.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with scheduling tools or fleet management software is an asset.

Foothills School Division (FSD) serves the learning needs of approximately 8,200 students in junior kindergarten (pre-kindergarten) through grade 12, and employs more than 900 teachers and support staff who are focused on our common goal of “Improving Learning for ALL Students.”

Located on the City of Calgary’s southern border within the Municipal District of Foothills, the Division encompasses the Towns of Okotoks, High River, Black Diamond and Turner Valley as well as the communities served by our Blackie, Cayley, Heritage Heights (DeWinton), Longview, Millarville and Red Deer Lake (south Calgary) schools.
