Job Summary

The Clinical Supervisor supports and promotes best practices in patient care by providing clinical guidance, oversight, and mentorship to staff. This role works closely with the Clinical Manager, offering day-to-day support in supervisory duties and helping ensure operational efficiency. The Clinical Supervisor also assumes delegated responsibilities and provides coverage in the Clinical Managers absence, including during vacation or leave.

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to the mission, vision, and values of both the organization and department.
  • Upholds and promotes a culture of Professional Excellence within the ED team.
  • Supports the Clinical Manager (CM) and education team in embedding professional standards into daily nursing practice.
  • Assists in developing, revising, and implementing unit-specific policies and procedures to enhance patient care.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of hospital and departmental policies to support staff and ensure compliance.
  • Collaborates effectively with both internal departments and external partners to ensure coordinated, high-quality care.
  • Manages and escalates operational, clinical practice, and process issues as required.
  • Conducts workflow evaluations and contributes to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Leads the development and refinement of processes, policies, and procedures through continuous improvement.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of existing standards and recommends enhancements where appropriate.
  • Provides advanced support in de-escalation and conflict resolution beyond the scope of frontline staff.
  • Guides and educates staff in understanding and implementing the Pay for Results initiative.
  • Serves as a champion for quality improvement and risk mitigation within the department.
  • Manages follow-up and resolution of Patient Relations concerns in collaboration with appropriate teams.
  • Participates in the rollout of new initiatives, offering real-time education and continuous role modeling.
  • Represents the ED as a subject matter expert on various hospital committees.
  • Leads and supports the planning and delivery of Skills Day and other educational programs.
  • Develops and delivers onboarding education for new charge nurses, team leaders, clinical staff, volunteers, co-op students, ER technicians, and UCAs.
  • Oversees follow-up for all infection control exposures within the department.
  • Implements and communicates the monthly Code of the Month via the Huddle Board, ensuring staff awareness.
  • Provides senior leadership and coordination for the ED Surge Space, ensuring operational continuity during high-demand periods.
  • Acts on behalf of the manager in their absence, including addressing staff illnesses, WSIB claims, and workplace violence incidents.
  • Partners with the covering manager to assist with patient follow-ups and emergent issues.
  • Maintains a flexible schedule: primarily Monday–Friday, with support coverage during off-hours and weekends as required.

Qualifications

  • Current certificate with the College of Nurses
  • Baccalaureate degree and Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of five years emergency department experience
  • Charge nurse experience in MH ED
  • Familiarity with the clinical operations of an emergency department.
  • Advanced knowledge of hospital standards, policies, procedures, reporting structure and emergency measures.
  • Working knowledge of process change methodology
  • Enhanced interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict management and proven ability to work as part of an interprofessional team.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and organizational skills.
  • Excellent attendance
