About the role
Role Summary: The Accountant is responsible for providing high-level financial oversight, ensuring compliance, and maintaining the technical accuracy of all accounting and tax services. This role includes preparing and reviewing tax filings (corporate, personal, trust), ensuring compliance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) regulations, and providing expert guidance to both clients and internal staff. The Accountant at GoGet Inc. typically holds a CPA designation or equivalent experience.
Key Duties:
Financial Oversight & Review: Review the bookkeeping work done by the Bookkeepers for accuracy and completeness. On a monthly or quarterly basis (depending on the client’s package), review financial reports and reconciliations, and provide guidance on any necessary adjustments. Ensure that all transactions are classified correctly and that reconciliations are completed (bank accounts, credit cards, loans, etc.) to maintain accurate books.
Corporate Tax (T2) Preparation: Take the lead on preparing and filing corporate tax returns (T2) for clients. Gather the year-end financial statements (from the Bookkeepers) and any additional info needed for tax adjustments. Calculate tax provisions and complete the T2 return, including schedules for deductions, credits, and adjustments, in compliance with CRA rules. Ensure corporate returns are filed on time (generally within 6 months of fiscal year-end) and that clients are informed of any tax
balances owing or refunds due. Double-check that year-end filings are included in all our packages as promised.
• Personal and Business and Trust Tax Filings (T1, T2, T3): Oversee the preparation of personal tax returns (T1) for clients (often the business owners), as included in packages or as one-time services. Ensure slips (T4, T5, etc.) and other income/deduction information are collected from clients by the Front Desk or CEM. Review and finalize T1 returns and file them by the deadline (April 30 for most individuals; June 15 for self-employed). Similarly, handle any trust returns (T3) for estates or trusts if the firm offers this service, ensuring compliance with trust tax rules.
• Tax Compliance & Planning: Monitor changes in tax legislation and ensure the firm’s practices stay compliant. Provide tax planning advice or coordinate with external tax specialists if complex issues arise. For example, if a client could benefit from a different corporate structure or has questions about compensation (salary versus dividends), the Accountant will analyse and advise or arrange a separate CPA consultation service. The Accountant also ensures slip filing compliance, making sure T4/T4A slips are issued to employees and contractors by the deadline (last day of February) and T5 slips are issued to shareholders for any dividends paid.
CRA Coordination & Audit Support: Act as the lead in any communications with the CRA. If a client faces a CRA audit or receives a notice (for GST, payroll, or income tax), the Accountant coordinates the response. This involves gathering required documents (with help from Bookkeepers and the client), drafting response letters, and representing the client’s case to the CRA. GoGet Inc. offers CRA Audit Support as a service, which includes handling CRA questions or audits related to payroll or GST, and managing correspondence. The Accountant ensures that all responses are timely and accurate, enabling efficient resolution of such matters.
• Technical Guidance & Training: Offer advice to Bookkeepers on complex accounting issues (e.g., how to record unusual transactions, manage multi-year catch-up bookkeeping, implement new accounting standards, etc.). If Bookkeepers encounter transactions that require judgment (such as revenue recognition complexities or asset depreciation), the Accountant provides guidance. Also, facilitate regular training sessions for the team on topics like tax updates, compliance standards, or quality control procedures. This promotes ongoing professional development and ensures adherence to best practices.
• Service Innovation & Quality Control: Continuously enhance our service processes to deliver exceptional quality. The Accountant develops or updates checklists for tasks (e.g., a month-end close checklist, a tax return review checklist) to reduce errors. They also introduce an internal review step for all key deliverables – for example, no tax return is filed without a second-person review (usually by the Accountant or a peer). The Accountant maintains a log of any errors discovered during reviews and addresses their root causes through training or process improvements, thereby upholding high-quality standards.
• Client Advisory & CPA Consultation: For higher-tier clients or as an additional service, the Accountant may act as a virtual CFO or advisor, offering strategic advice beyond compliance. This might include interpreting financial statements for the client, advising on cash flow or budgeting, or consulting on the tax implications of business decisions. If a formal CPA Tax Consultation (at an hourly fee) is requested, the Accountant will either lead that meeting or ensure an appropriate CPA is assigned, then follow through on implementing any agreed strategies.
