About the role
The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
Position title: Safewalk Driver
Reports to: Safewalk Coordinator
Employee Status: Temporary, part-time until December 31, 2025
Hours per week: 10-20 (applicants must have a minimum availability of 12 hours per week/be available for 2 shifts/week)
Compensation: $18.67 per hour.
Position Overview
Safewalk provides a free service to accompany students, staff and visitors between any two points on campus, 7 nights a week, if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable doing so alone.
- Drivers are primarily responsible for piloting an AMS vehicle to facilitate these transfers.
- Walking and co-pilot shifts may also be assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Drive/walk clients across campus in a safe and professional manner
- Maintain visibility to students, faculty and staff during campus patrols
- Maintain accountability of office material
- Complete appropriate paperwork and documentation to record transfers and incidents
- Actively uphold and promote the philosophy and integrity of the Safewalk service
- Act in a professional manner reflective of the standards of the AMS
- Actively participate in Safewalk’s promotion campaigns
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a currently registered UBC Student
- Must be available for late night and weekend shifts
- Professional, responsible, and able to maintain composure under stress
- Good knowledge of the geographical layout of the UBC campus
- Outgoing, energetic and flexible
- A sincere interest in improving safety in the campus community
- Experience with Safewalk an asset
- Candidates must be willing to submit a criminal record check
- Must hold a valid class 5 or equivalent driver’s license

Safewalk operates 7 days/week from 8pm to 2am from September to April. Please indicate which days and shifts you are available to work during Term 1 and Term 2. Also, if you anticipate any scheduling conflicts, please let us know (such as co-op, exchange, vacation, other jobs, etc.).

If you pass the interview stage, you will need to complete a short driving test (15 - 30 minutes) on August 15 or 16. Are you available to take an in-person driving test at UBC Campus (yes or no)?

Are you available for MANDATORY Safewalk training on August 22 and 23? (Only answer “Yes” or “No”)

Please attach a copy of your driver's license (must be a valid BC Class 5 or equivalent license from another Province/Territory or another country).

Are you located on campus or off campus? If you are located off campus, please describe your plan to safely return home after 2am.
