Civil Surveillance Technologist 1 - FTT - Fort St. John Site C

What you'll do

  • Installs, records readings from, troubleshoots, maintains a variety of manual civil (geotechnical and structural)

instrumentation in dams, underground areas and reservoir slopes. Conducts special experiments and test to analyze

malfunctioning or faulty devices and recommends corrective actions under the guidance of higher-level Civil Surveillance

Technologists.

  • Installs, analyzes, troubleshoots and maintains the automated data acquisition system (ADAS) for civil instrumentation.

The collection system consists of many devices including but not limited to: dataloggers, radios, network peripherals,

cameras, and servers. Instrumentation includes: pressure transducers, thermistors water level monitoring, weather

monitoring devices, tiltmeters, and strong motion accelerometers.

  • Develops macros or routines to automate tasks in the ADAS. Writes datalogger programs to execute readings from

sensors to carry out calculations on incoming data. Analyzes output of programs to determine validity of results.

  • Performs visual inspections at facilities of civil assets to confirm normal operation and conditions and to identify any

changes or areas of concern using remote operated vehicle (ROV) or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

  • Provides a variety of technical, design and administrative support such as: reviewing instrumentation designs from

Engineering; preparing deficiency lists for ADAS maintenance; and designing non-routine equipment for testing as required.

  • Performs or reviews a variety of precise technical first orders and special field surveys and associated technical

calculations to identify potential structural movement at dams and/or ground movement at surrounding reservoir slopes.

  • Provides technical advice and guidance to field staff related to resolving dam site operational and maintenance equipment

(such as dataloggers, cameras, sensors, radio or cell system) problems. Works with and provides input related to civil

surveillance equipment installations or upgrades on engineering capital projects at facilities.

  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties that do not affect the rating of the job.

What you bring

  • National Technology Diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Electronics or a related technical

discipline.

  • Two (2) years experience working in a geotechnical environment where experience in instrumentation, surveillance

monitoring or inspection has been gained.

  • Must hold a valid class five (5) driver's licence.

Working Conditions:

Approximately 65% of the work is performed outside of the office reading and maintaining geotechnical and structural

instrumentation or carrying out inspections. Regularly exposed to high voltage electricity when working in generation

stations and switchyards. Occasionally works at construction sites and in confined spaces. Occasional requirement to climb

ladders during inspections or to access instrumentation. Regularly walks over rough terrain with an occasional requirement

to hike and climb with instrumentation equipment. Occasional exposure to dangerous wildlife and regular exposure to other

job site hazards during field work.

Frequent exposure to all types of weather conditions during field work. Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Occasional lifting of instrument installations, poles, reading equipment, earth samples, batteries and manhole lids of heavy

weight.

  • This role will interest those who seek a good mix of office and field work and enjoy performing hands on work.

  • Applicant should be comfortable and familiar with using standard power tools such as drills.

  • Familiarity with electronics and the principles of DC electrical circuits is an asset for this role

  • A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain the following requirements in good standing: Driver's License
