Community Outreach Worker – Regina Public Library

Permanent Full-Time

This is a permanent full-time position that includes daytime, evening and Saturday shifts that rotate bi-weekly. This position is located at the Central Branch of Regina Public Library to provide community outreach, support, referrals, and system navigation to the community. The Community Outreach Worker is responsible to help Regina Public Library Customers find services and make changes to help improve their lives.

The Community Outreach Worker is responsible for working directly with vulnerable or at-risk individuals who are affected by mental health issues or addictions, live in poverty, face homelessness and/or experience marginalization or social exclusion in other ways. Issues presented to this position may be varied and complex and require a great degree of discretion. The Outreach Worker is responsible for working with community organizations and community members to develop collaborative connections to address the needs of library customers and potential customers who face barriers to library service.

This position is responsible for working with the public and de-escalating difficult situations. The Outreach Worker will assess risk and evaluate threats posed by library customers who exhibit challenging behaviours, including risks that range from direct verbal abusive behaviour, verbal or physical threats to more indirect threats. The Community Outreach Worker works in close collaboration with Regina Public Library Personnel (especially Librarians and Security Personnel) to support a safe and supportive library experience for everyone utilizing the facility. Occasional crisis debrief support to Library Personnel impacted by a highly escalated, conflictual, or crisis experience may be provided.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related discipline.

• A minimum of 2 years’ experience with demonstrated knowledge and professional practice skills in frontline services including case management, crisis management, program management, and/or brief service/crisis intervention.

• Preferably holds or is eligible for a professional license or registration with Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers, Saskatchewan College of Psychologists, or the Canadian Counselor and Psychotherapy Association, or equivalent.

• Familiarity with a wide variety of evidenced based human service outreach and anti-oppressive models of service delivery.

• Ability to assess high risk situations (suicidal) and engage in risk assessment, safety planning and referral as necessary.

• Collaborative planning and person-centred outreach and crisis work to ensure the person is involved in decisions or actions required to mitigate crisis or initiate planning steps.

• Builds and maintains relationships with community organizations that serve populations that face marginalization including food security, housing, income security, addictions and mental health, and crisis services.
