About the role

The Supervisor, Rigging is responsible for managing the Rigging department trades workers. The Rigging Supervisor reports to the Manager, Pipe & Mechanical and works together with operations, project managers and chargehands to plan, oversee, execute, set priorities and determine staffing requirements within VDC’s Rigging department. The Rigging Supervisor is responsible for ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with shipyard safety, quality, and environment standards, policies and procedures. To ensure standards are met the Rigging Supervisor will regularly check on performance, conduct performance management tasks, including but not limited to disciplining trades employees, manage trade employee timecards, trade employee leave requests and ensuring the collective agreement is applied appropriately.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 203 East Esplanade, North Vancouver.

What you’ll do

  • Ensures work progression in accordance with safety, cost, quality and schedules.
  • Implements and enforces Seaspan Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality processes on the shop floor and strives to eliminate safety hazards at every opportunity.
  • Reports internally on work process and status.
  • Escalates technical trade issues with Management and implements solutions as identified by Management.
  • Responsible for interpreting work order specifications and manufacturing information, keeping updated on standards and changes in plans, and provisioning materials in the case of unavailability.
  • Assists in determining work plans, sequences and schedules and may be required to assist in preparing estimates.
  • Responsible for delivering production in accordance with Company and customer quality standards.
  • Partners with Management to ensure trade employees have the skills, equipment, training and certifications required to perform planned work activities.
  • Ensures work crews minimize waste expense and unnecessary delays in construction or repair work.
  • Works with Management to eliminate inefficient work practice and fully use their work crew experience and skills to progress the work.
  • Allocates trades employees in accordance with schedule and priorities, assigning work to trade employees with the skill and ability to efficiently complete scheduled work.
  • Responsible for discipline, including performance and attendance management, termination of employment, as well as assigning or removing chargehand responsibilities to trades employees.
  • Follows and enforces the collective agreement and management practices to manage trades employees effectively.
  • Responsible for timekeeping administration and approval of direct and indirect reports.
  • Ensures all employees are provided with a work environment that is respectful and harassment free.
  • Works closely with Wellness and Abilities Management as required.
  • Other duties as assigned and open to occassional overtime.

What you’ll bring

  • Trades certifications are required.
  • Minimum 5 years of related trades work experience; or advanced education in a related field with 2 years related trades work experience.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Proficient knowledge of trade responsibilities specific to heavy manufacturing (welding, metal fabrication, electrical, pipefitting, mechanical, rigging, etc.).
  • Minimum 5 years of related trades work experience; or advanced education in a related field with 3 years related trades work experience.
  • Proficient knowledge of trade responsibilities specific to heavy manufacturing (welding, metal fabrication, electrical, pipefitting, mechanical, rigging, etc.).

The estimated salary for this position is $115,000 - $127,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
