The Opportunity

Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.

Under the general guidance and direction of the Recreation Inclusion Programmer, and reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the Inclusion Support Assistant (PT) position is responsible for providing one to one support to persons with disabilities and/or unique needs who are participating in the City’s recreation programs. Specifically, this position provides individual support and adapts program content to meet an individual’s specific needs. Overall, this position plays an integral role in supporting individuals with disabilities and/or unique needs to allow them to participate in recreation programs.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Behavioural Management System (BMS) Certification from an accredited institution and/or association before first day of hire
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development Certificate from HIGH FIVE® National within three (3) months of hire

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience providing support to persons with disabilities and/or unique needs

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • General knowledge of disabilities and unique needs
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively respond to and accommodate individuals with disabilities and/or unique needs
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission and values
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays, as required

Conditions of Employment

  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check* and Vulnerable Sector Checks

  • Please note that this is a requirement for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.

Other Important Information

Wage: This is a casual part-time non-union position with the following 2025 pay range:

  • Hourly Pay Rate: $19.01 to $23.18

Hours: The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand.

Location: Allandale Recreation Centre (190 Bayview Drive, Barrie), East Bayfield Community Centre (80 Livingstone Street East, Barrie), Peggy Hill Team Community Centre (171 Mapleton Avenue, Barrie).
