Operator (Independent Subcontractor) – Accessible Transit

Care Accessible Transportation – York Region, ON

Care Accessible Transportation is currently seeking motivated and experienced individuals to join our team as Independent Subcontractors, operating sedans and wheelchair-accessible minivans within the Region of York. This is a rewarding opportunity for reliable, professional operators who are passionate about helping others and are committed to providing high-quality accessible transportation services on behalf of Mobility on Request – York Region Transit (YRT).

Position Type:

Qualifications:

  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License (Minimum Class G) with a clean driving record

  • Minimum 3 years of commercial driving experience

  • Experience in passenger transportation is an asset

  • Clean driver’s abstract

  • Clear Police Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)

  • Ability to work long and flexible shifts (including one weekend day is mandatory)

  • Excellent knowledge of York Region roads and geography

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and assist with mobility devices

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Safely transport passengers according to a pre-scheduled manifest

  • Provide door-to-door service, assisting passengers in and out of the vehicle

  • Operate YRT-branded vehicles in all weather and road conditions

  • Properly secure riders and mobility aids (e.g., wheelchairs, walkers, service animals)

  • Use tablet-based routing technology for trip management and communication with Dispatch

  • Conduct daily vehicle circle checks and maintain inspection documentation

  • Report passenger or vehicle issues, incidents, or emergencies promptly

  • Manage passenger interactions professionally, with empathy and efficiency

  • Keep the vehicle clean and in excellent operating condition

Skills & Competencies:

  • Exceptional customer service and strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong organizational skills and time management

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • Ability to push/pull wheelchairs and mobility devices, including on inclines or ramps

  • Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities is a strong asset

Training Requirement:

Candidates must be available for 3 days of mandatory training by YRT:

  • July 18 & 19: Core Operational Training
  • July 20: First Aid Certification

Work Schedule Options:

  • 12-hour shifts
  • Flexible availability including:
  • Early Morning: 5:00 AM – 5:00 PM, 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Morning: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM, 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
  • Afternoon: 12:00 PM – 12:00 AM, 3:00 PM – 3:00 AM
  • Weekdays, weekends, and holidays
  • Work location: Throughout York Region, ON

Note: Schedule is flexible based on operational requirements
