About the role

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Mechanical, the Supervisor plays a critical leadership role in supporting a skilled and high performing team. The core focus of the Supervisor, Mechanical is leading a frontline team of skilled tradespersons, providing guidance, support, and ensuring a high quality of workmanship in a culture of safety. They are also responsible for the ongoing assessment of individual and team performance through coaching, and developing and empowering team members. The Supervisor, Mechanical works collaboratively with planners to execute the operating plan, and supports delivery of capital and maintenance programs.

This position is deemed Safety Critical and pre-employment testing will be required. Final candidates must successfully pass a safety critical medical exam and will undergo medical monitoring as prescribed by Transport Canada.  This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment.

Compensation

  • Pay range: $99,000 to $117,000 per annum
  • Eligible for Rocky Mountaineer’s Short Term Incentive Plan (STIP) up to 10%

Key Areas of Accountability

  • Lead, manage, and coach a team of skilled tradespersons
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement using the RM core competency model
  • Provide clear direction, set expectations, and ensure individual and team goals are aligned with operational priorities
  • Monitor and manage the workload of the frontline mechanical team
  • Lead work order planning and resource allocation, in collaboration with internal and external departments
  • Model and reinforce safe work practices through audits, coaching, and safety talks
  • Inspect work done and validate quality of workmanship through work order closing processes
  • Support team growth by identifying training needs and recommending development opportunities
  • Facilitate goal planning and goal management for team members
  • Execute maintenance programs for sites, facilities, and fleets
  • Responsible for hiring, conducting investigations, and exercising corrective action plans for performance management and workplace incidents
  • Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with partners, suppliers, and contractors
  • Delivery of site-specific safety orientations
  • Comply with Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), General Operating Instructions (GOI), Federal Railroad Association (FRA), and all other safety policies, procedures, and rules
  • Execute incident reporting processes ensuring the safety and security of team members, guests, and contractors
  • Perform safety and rule audits on team members and contractors
  • Ensure training records for team members are up to date
  • May be required to train for and perform switching duties

Qualifications

  • Red Seal qualification or relevant mechanical/technical certifications are an asset
  • Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Previous qualification under CROR and railroad experience is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of skilled tradespersons
  • Attention to detail with a desire to maintain brand standards
  • Effective time management and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with mechanical & facilities operational and maintenance requirements
  • Proficiency in MS Office and computer savvy
  • Good communication and leadership skills

Work Environment

  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Rail industrial site- indoor/outdoor working environment
  • 24/7 operation that may require varied work schedules
