About The Position The Sample Preparation Lead Hand/Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of the Sample Preparation floor while on shift and will delegate the training and development of the Sample Preparation technicians. The priority for this position will be to ensure that the department runs smoothly while monitoring that the technicians on shift are following client instructions correctly.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Manages the process of sample preparation as the samples and supplies arrive in the lab;
  • Performs work order entry checks;
  • Performs basic mechanical maintenance as required;
  • Performs QA checks – including pulps, crushing and ringing;
  • Ensures that all Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to;
  • Maintains close liaison with lab staff, Supervisor and Manager to ensure the smooth delivery of our services to clients;
  • Responsible for training and monitoring performance of all sample preparation staff on all sample prep, layout, pre-write-up, special prep procedures and QA checking;
  • Conducts monthly balance checks and inventory control;
  • Identifies and, in consultation with Supervisor or Manager, resolves internal and external problems when they arise;
  • Coordinates and prioritizes daily workloads;
  • Maintains shift production levels and ensures sample preparation work meets required turnaround time;
  • Ensures special requests and rushes are handled correctly and in a timely manner;
  • Determines when client sample processing instructions are missing, incomplete or ambiguous by maintaining close liaison with layout personnel and the work order entry group;
  • Conducts monthly crew talk to discuss safety and quality issues with the staff;
  • Maintains communication with marketing and client service personnel if required;
  • Acts as backup for the Supervisor during vacation and other absences;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of sample prep procedures and methods;
  • Experience in managing and training staff;
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory computer systems;
  • Basic Mechanical aptitude;
  • Organized and highly motivated individual;
  • Detail oriented individual with a strong commitment to quality and safety;
  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team;
  • Ability to effectively handle a high volume of work and time critical issues;
  • Strong interpersonal skills along with the ability to exercise diplomacy and tact;
  • Excellent English communication skills both written and verbal;
  • Excellent computer skills including LIMS, Webview, MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years work experience in a commercial minerals laboratory or minerals sample preparation required;
  • Degree or diploma in mineral/geology/Chemistry an asset;
  • Forklift licence/certification, or experience driving a forklift an asset.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for up to 7.5 hours per day;
  • Ability to work in a hot and dusty environment;
  • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive tasks;
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Be cleanly-shaven in order to wear protective equipment.
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
