Duties

The successful candidate will conduct analysis of seabird tracking data to quantify movements and habitat use. During the summer, the student may conduct field work researching and monitoring seabirds in Nova Scotia. This will include studies estimating diet and using telemetry to track movements.

The Canadian Wildlife Service is a branch of Environment and Climate Change Canada whose work contributes to the conservation, research, regulations and monitoring relating to migratory birds.

  • Education:

Currently enrolled in:
Enrolled in an Masters degree of Science program at Acadia University with an acceptable specialization in biology or some other science relevant to the position.

Justification:
The position is posted for a student at the Acadia University in order to work in association with a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences who is collaborating with the Canadian Wildlife Service on data analysis and field studies. The professor has collected relevant data for the analysis and has supported fieldwork for tag deployments and recovery related to the project. Working in Wolfville, the student will have access to mentorship, appropriate datasets, and necessary guidance for analyses.

Degree equivalency

Information on language requirements

  • Experience:

  • Minimum of at least one of experience in each of the following areas:

Experience* in collecting, analyzing and mapping telemetry data from animals
Experience* in handling and collecting biological information from marine birds
Experience* deploying GPS and/or GLS telemetry devices on marine birds
Experience* in conducting field work in seabird colonies

  • Personal Suitability:

Adaptability
Effective interpersonal skills

Conditions of employment

  • Possessing a valid driver’s license

  • Security Clearance : Reliability

Note: Each student hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) must meet the security requirements of the position as a condition of employment. Therefore, the student will be asked by the hiring organization to complete security-related documents.
