Description PURPOSE OF POSITION
- To develop, improve, sustain, or restore skills in activities of daily living, work or productive activities, and play or leisure.
- To identify and facilitate engagement in meaningful and health occupations.
- To develop, remediate, or restore sensorimotor, cognitive, or psychosocial components of performance
- To enhance performance of occupations by adaptation of environments, application of ergonomic principles or other processes required for successful community reintegration.
- To design, fabricate, apply and train in the use of assistive technology or equipment.
- To provide training, educational and consultative services to staff, students, community and academic institutions. To participate in research and program evaluation projects
Duties & Responsibilities
- Identifying client's needs in an outpatient setting by providing Occupational Therapy assessment, which may include risk assessment, functional assessment, community living skills, mental status, cognitive, perceptual, interpersonal/social skills, prevocational, home assessment, feeding, seating/mobility, augmentive, motor function, environmental, adaptive equipment devices. Assessment tools may include selected activities, diagnostic or psychometric batteries and O.T. assessment methods, tests and observations.
- Determining treatment goals and developing individual treatment plans in collaboration with client; their families, their support network and the treatment team; implementing interventions utilizing specific media and selected activities in a group setting or individually; environmental adaptations; counselling; skill teaching; evaluating, adjusting, modifying or terminating treatment plans where appropriate; providing crisis intervention; maintaining accurate clinical records according to established standards. Maintaining occupational equipment in safe working order and recommending acquisition of equipment and supplies.
- Providing client reports and case management to assigned case load, while contributing to decisions in treatment team meetings.
- Participating in quality assurance, outcome measurement, research and administrative activities.
- Designing, organizing and supervising training for assigned students in occupational therapy and preparing evaluations of students' performance for the university programs.
- Providing consultative and educational services including conducting seminars and workshops for other disciplines within the hospital, community groups and educational institutions; planning and delivering academic lectures at the university and participating in clinical research, program evaluation activities, and quality improvement activities.
- Contributing as a team member through regular attendance and participation in team meetings, defining Occupational Therapy role on the team within the context of client needs, the resources available on the treatment team, and the overall program goals; assuming case coordination/generic assessment roles as assigned
- Participate in the Occupational Therapy Council of Ontario Shores.
- Responsible to recognize and report patient, staff, and environment safety issues, identify and implement preventative and corrective actions, within the scope of this role.
Qualifications Required & Preferred
- A Master’s Degree, or equivalent, in Occupational Therapy.
- The successful candidate must be registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) in good standing.
- 3-5 years of recent occupational therapist experience in a mental health facility or service, experience in outpatient setting is preferred.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Current CPR HCP/BLS is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Mental Health, and relevant policies and legislation, such as the Mental Health Act and PHIPA is required.
- The candidate will have demonstrated excellent interpersonal and effective oral/written communication skills.
- Must be available to work some weekend and on-call shifts.
- The ability to work with clients of diverse ethno racial and cultural backgrounds and proficiency in a second language is considered an asset.
- Must have the ability to perform the physical demands of the position.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Review Board process.
- Knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is preferred.
- Applicants are required to have a valid drivers license.
