Job Purpose

The Cargo Agent is responsible for the general oversight, direction, and coordination of cargo operations. This includes but is not limited to overseeing the shipment of cargo in and out of the terminal, ensuring that all shipments are picked up and delivered in a safe, accurate and timely manner, and confirming all paperwork is completed and fees are collected, while maintaining excellent customer service and adhering to all Transport Canada regulations.

Primary Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Advise clients on transportation and payment options.
  • Ensure consistent and superior customer service through awareness of customer needs, and trends.
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards customers and staff within a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with and enforcement of policies and procedures as established by the company, legislation, and related regulations.

Cargo

  • Accept and handle cargo in accordance with the Cargo Security Screening Program.
  • Process dangerous goods shipments.
  • Determine shipping methods and routes from drop off to destination.
  • Advise customers on postal rates, shipping costs, and other charges.
  • Prepare bills of lading, invoices, receipts, and other required shipping documents.
  • Record information such as cargo amount, weight, dimensions, and time of shipment.
  • Trace lost shipment as necessary.

Ground Services

  • Assist with ground services including aircraft taxiing procedures, aircraft marshalling, greeting customers, and professional baggage/cargo handling.
  • Assist in the coordination of baggage/cargo with the corresponding flight.
  • Operate and maintain ground support vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy cargo facility and work environment.

General Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of the company's vision, mission, and values.
  • Handle irregular operations or customer complaints such as lost cargo in a timely manner.
  • Receive phone calls and respond to various booking enquiries.
  • Maintain current knowledge of all necessary Transport Canada rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Foster a team-based environment through collaborative working relationships.
  • Ensure optimal communication with all employees and internal partners.
  • Participate in special projects as required.
  • Continuously update job knowledge by participating in training and other educational opportunities.
  • Protect Company values by keeping information confidential.
  • Ensure compliance with quality assurance and safety programs to promote an incident and injury free culture.

Qualifications

Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position include a high school diploma, with one to two years' progressive customer service experience or related role. Previous work experience or training in aviation is considered an asset.

Skills, knowledge, and abilities include:

  • Demonstrated experience in serving a diverse and complex customer base.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a provincial driver's license and an Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP).
  • Strong understanding of airline, aircraft, and ground handling procedures as they relate to aviation services.
  • Proven relationship management skills and demonstrated ability to influence, collaborate and negotiate with both internal partners and external stakeholders to achieve results.
  • Professional judgement and well-defined conflict resolution skills in handling sensitive situations with tact, diplomacy, and high ethical standards.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Sound problem solving, decision-making, analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects and tasks and execute effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Strong leadership skills and a hands-on, self-motivated, and demonstrated positive, can-do attitude.
  • Excellent people management skills with demonstrated ability to supervise, train and motivate.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to organize, multi-task and prioritize.
  • Proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office applications and software specific to company operations.
  • Ability to support, strengthen and enhance safety initiatives.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the following:
  • Provincial class 5 driver's license.
  • Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP).
  • Radio License.
  • Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC).
  • WHIMS and Dangerous Goods Awareness Training.

  • Ground power unit, lavatory cart.
  • Tractor tug and related ground handling equipment.
  • Forklift, de-icing equipment, aircraft fuelling equipment.
  • Radio base unit.
  • Standard office and telecommunications equipment.

Typical Physical and Cognitive Demands

  • Some of work is completed at a sit-down desk.
  • Required to be on call for evening and weekend shifts.
  • Ability to work long, sometimes irregular hours.
  • Able to prioritize and organize objectives and meet deadlines in a fast-paced office environment.
  • Must quickly adapt to changing assignments.
  • Required to act professionally and use mature judgment.
  • Physically fit, able to safely undertake physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to safely move and provide varied ground services to aircraft and equipment.
  • Ability to work on elevated work platforms.
  • Ability to handle customer luggage and freight.
  • Ability to lift 70 pounds.
  • Ground and/or air travel required.
