About the role

The Opportunity

General Bank of Canada is looking for a permanent, fulltime Chief Financial Officer to join as a key contributor of the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) at General Bank of Canada (the Bank), playing a critical role in strategic planning, financial management, and regulatory compliance.

Reporting to the President, and working collaboratively with SLT, the CFO offers expert financial and business decision-making guidance on complex matters to drive growth and profitability. Leading a multi-disciplinary team of financial professionals, the CFO oversees the Bank’s financial operations, ensuring long-term financial health and stability.

As the Bank scales and grows, the CFO’s mission is to create advanced finance, accounting and treasury functions that deliver high-impact actionable financial reporting, dynamic budgeting and forecasting to optimize efficiency in alignment with the company’s ambitious growth plans. Additionally, the CFO ensures the Bank delivers accurate and relevant financial information to various interested parties including the Board of Directors, CEO, various committees, and auditors.

Position Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and evolution of the Bank’s strategy, vision, core values, and long-term goals.
  • Inspire and motivate the enterprise, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation by positively influencing change and articulating a compelling vision for the future.
  • Create and implement strategic financial plans to enable the Bank’s ongoing success.
  • Oversee the finance, accounting, and treasury functions to enable strategic decision-making, comprehensive financial analysis and planning, resource allocation, process optimization, and financial performance enhancements.
  • Manage relationships with financial institutions, rating agencies, financial advisors, capital investors, federal program managers and other interested parties to maximize exposure and performance of the Bank’s capital project financing needs.
  • Ensure financial statements are prepared in strict accordance with reporting standards to maintain integrity of financial results and provide the highest level of financial transparency and accuracy.
  • Establish policies and procedures in alignment with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish and administer the overall financial activities of the Bank including cash management, treasury, and internal controls to ensure processes and procedures are in accordance with accounting standards, laws, and regulations and Bank policies.
  • Manage the Bank’s overall financial interests, capital structure and debt/equity ix, ensuring financial metrics and targets are met.
  • Collaborate with SLT and various business line leaders on financial reporting including monthly results, quarterly reviews, the year-end audit, annual forecasts, and federal tax returns and analysis to support enterprise decision-making.
  • Support the strategic planning of the annual business planning cycle within the Bank and update forecast information as required.
  • Provide analysis of significant variances from the business plan and forecasts, fluctuations from previously reported actual operating results, and other key operating metrics.
  • Prepare and finalize the Bank’s annual capital needs, support budget preparation and monitor expenditures.
  • Aim for the highest risk-adjusted return on assets and capital. Forecast future cash flow and monitor variances.
  • Leads the accurate and timely production of the financial reports for Shareholders, the Board of Directors and relevant committees, lenders, research analysts, governments, and regulatory bodies including the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI).
  • Prepare materials, presentations, and packages for Board of Director meetings and present financial, treasury, and other functional subjects.
  • In partnership with Internal Auditors, the Chief Risk Officer, and the risk function, mitigate threats and emerging risks including AML, fraud, I.T. design, cyber risk, and insurance.
  • Manage responses to internal audit findings and recommendations with the President and SLT.

What You Bring to the Table

The CFO is a strategic leader who is an effective problem solver, relationship builder, and communicator with sharp business financial acumen.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related discipline.
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible and recent financial management experience.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
  • Financial services expertise including regulatory compliance and financial risk management.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, inspire and lead high-performing finance teams.
  • Proven record in implementing and maintaining robust financial policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Deep understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Advanced level working knowledge of general accounting principles/standards.
  • Extensive knowledge of the full range of business functions and systems including strategic development, planning, budgeting, and business analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or relevant post-graduate program.
  • Previous experience in an executive leadership position at a high-growth company.
  • Strong ERP and systems background.
  • Proven experience in managing vendor relationships, including independent service providers and technology contractors.
