The Labourer (Electrical) assists with overall installation, testing, and maintenance of various types of electronic equipment in buses, on Light Rail Transit (LRT) platforms, fleet vehicles, and at customer service locations. Primary duties include:

  • Assist with testing, troubleshooting, and replacing electronic equipment.
  • Install various electronics systems which may include Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)/Automated Vehicle Location (AVL), Electronic Fare Collection (EFC), Automatic Passenger Counters (APC), Transit Signal Priority (TSP), radios, modems, cameras, and destination signs.
  • Obtain and maintain equipment in the repair shop, stores, and warehouse.
  • Perform functional and quality control testing of new electronic equipment and contact vendors to return faulty equipment.
  • Prepare cable and wiring for installation into buses, LRT platforms, fleet vehicles, etc.
  • Maintain workshop equipment, tools, and test benches to be clean, safe, and in good working condition.
  • Maintain work areas in good working order, ensuring safety precautions are in place, and cleaning the area.
  • Respond to requests for support that may require evening or overnight service (such as equipment replacement) in order to be ready for the next day's pull out.

Qualifications

  • At least 12 months' related experience, including aftermarket installation of equipment on vehicles, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with using electronic test equipment for troubleshooting, and interpreting schematics, is strongly preferred.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • Preference will be given to those with a High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED).
  • The ability to use machinery, equipment, and basic hand tools (crimpers, stripers) is an asset.
  • Technical/mechanical aptitude would be considered assets.
  • Ability to resolve issues and follow procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Success in this position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, political and public sensitivity, ability to deal with the public and collaborate in a team environment.

Working Conditions: This position involves hard to access places; lifting; moving equipment; repetitive movements; working in walking, standing, and crouching positions; working in various types of weather and environmental conditions.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.
