About the role

Tax Accountant / Manager

My Client is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Tax Manager – Accountant specializing in public practice and public accounting for large corporations, with a shared focus on estates and trusts. This role is essential to ensuring full compliance with federal, provincial, and payroll tax obligations while identifying opportunities for tax efficiency and supporting long-term strategic growth.

Reporting directly to the Senior Partner, you will lead all aspects of corporate, indirect, and estate/trust tax compliance. You will manage CRA interactions and collaborate with internal departments and external advisors to ensure full adherence to Canadian accounting standards and evolving tax legislation.

Key Responsibilities:

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Prepare and review corporate income tax returns (T2), GST/HST filings, payroll remittances, and estate/trust filings.
  • Ensure accurate and timely tax reporting and reconciliation across jurisdictions.
  • Maintain compliance with CRA and provincial requirements and ensure audit readiness.

Tax Planning & Advisory

  • Provide proactive tax planning strategies to minimize liabilities across corporate and trust structures.
  • Advise on tax implications related to M&As, reorganizations, and intercompany transactions.
  • Monitor tax law changes and communicate impact assessments to senior leadership.

Audit & Risk Management

  • Lead CRA audits, objections, appeals, and voluntary disclosures.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls to ensure tax accuracy and minimize exposure.
  • Document tax positions thoroughly and consult with legal and external advisors as needed.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise and mentor junior staff involved in tax preparation and advisory services.
  • Collaborate with legal, finance, and operations teams to align tax strategy with overall business goals.
  • Support financial planning by providing reliable tax projections and input for budgeting processes.

Qualifications:

Required

  • CPA designation (CA, CGA, or CMA) in good standing with CPA Canada.
  • 7 to 10 years of progressive experience in public practice or corporate tax, with a strong focus on large corporate clients and estates/trusts.
  • Advanced knowledge of Canadian corporate, indirect, and estate/trust tax regulations.
  • Proficient in tax software (e.g., CaseWare, Taxprep, CCH) and ERP/accounting systems.
  • Understanding of ASPE or IFRS tax reporting.

Assets

  • Strong experience managing CRA audits and complex tax scenarios.
  • Familiarity with large corporate groups, high-net-worth individuals, and trust structures.
  • Knowledge of First Nation tax considerations or not-for-profit tax filings.
  • Exposure to cross-border or international tax issues.

Compensation

  • Base Salary: $145,000 – $150,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
  • Incentives: Performance-based incentives could bring total annual compensation up to $200,000.
  • Growth Opportunity: For the right candidate, future partnership opportunities may be available as part of the firm’s succession and expansion plans.
