About the Position:
Reporting directly to the Outreach Specialist – Outreach Programs, the Outreach Assistant - Food Bank Services, supports the operation of Vancouver’s Pet Food Bank by coordinating with food donors, BC SPCA Vancouver Branch, BC SPCA Vancouver Animal Hospital and Jacob’s Well providing on-site supervision to practicum students and volunteers, and performing all related administrative functions.
Some specific duties:
Vancouver Pet Food Bank:
- Creates a welcoming and a safe environment for clients and volunteers alike.
- Engages clients, answering questions and providing resources as needed.
- Records and supervises volunteers recording information such as:
- Statistics on visitors and distributed - food, litter, nail trims, etc.
- Spay/neuter referrals
- Supplies / needs for weekly pet food bank
- Liaises with Jacob’s Well on site, ensuring volunteers and clients follow and respect JW policies and protocols as well as ensuring site is left clean following weekly food bank.
- Supports, and coordinates food bank volunteers and UBC practicum students, including scheduling, training & supervision; provides supplies and equipment as necessary.
- Acts as liaison between Outreach Specialist – Outreach Programs, and Vancouver BC SPCA Branch and BC SPCA Vancouver Animal Hospital.
- Inform Outreach Specialist about periods of absence
- Perform nail trims and de-matting shaves on cats, dogs, and small animals as required
- Pack, load and transport animal supplies and food to and from food bank location and community partners.
- Coordinate vehicle repairs in the event of vehicle damage
- Drive BC SPCA vehicle to the DTES as part of the food bank program
- Make recommendations to improve efficiency and reach of the pet food bank program
- Participate in Outreach Team meetings
Administration:
- Ensures records and weekly Vancouver Food Bank numbers are recorded and maintained.
- Troubleshoots any issues with recording as required.
- Ensures Food Bank
Qualifications you need to have:
- Training in animal care plus 3 years’ experience in working with people and animals; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Training and experience in animal behaviour and/or social work are considered to be assets
- Ability to work independently and implement policy and procedures
- Ability to identify and deescalate potential conflict
- Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
- A positive attitude and an empathetic approach to customer service for a diverse audience
- Physical ability to lift/push/pull heavy objects
- Ability to work Mondays and Tuesdays on a weekly basis
- Computer Skills – Windows, MS Office Excel
- Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers’ License and driver’s abstract
- Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission and strategic directions of the BC SPCA
