Department Information

The Department of Health and Social Services works under the direction of the Minister and Deputy Minister, in partnership with the Health and Social Services Authorities, to support the health and wellbeing of people across the NWT through planning, development, evaluation and reporting on program and service delivery.

SCOPE

The Non-insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Specialist is responsible for the processing of all account payable claims in the delivery of the NIHB program. This position is responsible for ensuring all accounts payable claims are completed in a timely manner and in accordance with the applicable legislations, related acts, regulations, policies, directives and contribution agreements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to acquire and apply knowledge of a variety of legislation and policies including but not limited to Canada Health Act, Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act and Data Release Guidelines, Indian Act, Service Act, Financial Administration Act, GNWT Health Information Act, etc., and the Medical Travel Policy and Traditional Healers Policy.
  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to acquire and apply knowledge of the Non-insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program.
  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to acquire and apply knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to acquire and apply knowledge of northern cultures and political systems.
  • Ability to acquire an understanding of the impacts of colonization, institutional and structural racism and biases have had on society, in particular Indigenous people who make up more than half the population.
  • Ability to commit to actively upholding and consistently practicing personal diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness, as well as safety and sensitivity approaches in the workplace.

TYPICALLY, THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE ATTAINED BY:

Grade 12 and two (2) years of relevant experience.

EQUIVALENCIES

Grade 11 and three (3) years of relevant experience.

Grade 10 and four (4) years of relevant experience.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
