Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

  • Must be registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba

  • Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 Drivers License

  • Must be able to work in an outdoor rough terrain environment, including near or on water, in both winter and summer in extreme temperatures

  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties and functions of the job including working at outdoor work sites, in confined spaces and extreme heights, and carrying out physical activities such as standing, sitting, walking, climbing, twisting, slip-trip-fall, lifting and carrying (0-22 lbs)

  • Must be able to work extended hours as required, including on evenings and weekends

  • Must be able to travel throughout the Province by ground and air transportation and be away from home for extended periods.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering or equivalency recognized by Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba.
  • Experience in bridge design engineering (structural, geotechnical, hydro-technical and transportation engineering).
  • Experience preparing and administering Engineering Service Provider (ESP) contracts.
  • Experience in project management including planning, design, environmental mitigation and approvals, construction, and maintenance of bridges and highway structures.
  • Experience in a leadership/supervisory role with the ability to coach and mentor staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to exercise sound judgement.
  • Strong verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences.
  • Effective written communication skills including the ability to prepare information for others.

Duties:

This position is responsible for structural design of major and minor projects on the capital program, including new construction, rehabilitation, and preservation projects; and managing projects on the capital program, from planning through preliminary and detailed design. The Design Engineer, with minimal supervision, is expected to apply sound engineering judgment and adhere to accepted codes, methodologies, specifications and Branch standards and policies.
