About the role

Position Overview

The hiring salary range for this position is from $105,836.25 to $121,705.35/annually.

A mid-level reference lab manager responsible for assisting and supporting reference lab managers in various aspects of their work, associate managers act as a bridge between reference lab managers and their team members, primarily helping to manage people and ensure laboratory tasks are completed efficiently and effectively, while following EORLA’s quality standards program.

Key Accountabilities:

Planning and Reporting

  • Supports regional discipline managers in the development of regional discipline annual plans, translating corporate strategic directions and priorities into specific objectives.

  • Contributes to the collection, tracking and monitoring of program performance metrics.

  • Ensures adherence to organizational policies and external legislative requirements.

People and Organizational Leadership

  • Provides input on staffing requirements.

  • Leads site recruitment and selection processes, including conducting interviews and leading staff onboarding and orientation and achievement of required competencies.

  • Ensures staff are engaged in training programs, tracks/records those completed.

  • Provides day-to-day leadership and performance management (disciple, absenteeism) at the site(s).

  • Supports with development and monitoring of work schedules, finding creative solutions to fill gaps as needed.

  • Monitors site-specific culture and productivity, and intervenes as necessary.

  • Supports with team building initiatives.

Financial Management

  • Supports managers with monitoring and tracking of discipline-specific budgets and provides rationale for variances.

  • Supports managers with the development of business cases for lab equipment/instruments, recommending purchases and requesting quotes.

  • Ensures required supplies are ordered as needed.

Stakeholder Relationship

  • Serves as a subject matter expert and resource in a defined discipline for EORLA broadly.

  • Delegated by reference lab manager to attend discipline-specific working groups or project committees, as required.

Operations & Project Management

  • Supports managers in ensuring that reference laboratories meet all internal and external accreditation and compliance standards, requirements and reporting.
  • Supports the development and revision of policies, procedures and technical guidelines that require updates.
  • Ensures that staff follow the best practice quality management program, ensuring alignment with quality goals and contributing to audit assessment, trend analysis, continuous improvement in practice, process and reporting.
  • Supports the management of projects in alignment with continuous improvement, enterprise-wide innovation and change management.

Basic Requirements

  • Completion of a Registered Medical Laboratory Technology program;

  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) in the appropriate field of practice;

  • Minimum of seven years of previous related experience, with a minimum of two years in a MLT-Charge position or other leadership role;

  • Strong knowledge and subject matter expertise in the hematology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, and virology disciplines;

  • Well organized with proven time management skills and multi-tasking ability;

  • Ability to build and sustain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and to foster a positive culture;

  • Operational knowledge of finance, human resources/labour relations, project management and technology oversight;

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;

  • Knowledge of laboratory medicine and service delivery models, standards of care, regulatory and legislative environment and accreditation processes and requirements;

  • Highly motivated;

  • Effective communicator, active listener, and adaptable to help ensure a supportive and collaborative working relationship with the relevant regional discipline managers;

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle as regular travel between laboratory sites may be required.

As a pre-condition of employment, all new EORLA employees will be required to obtain and provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check dated within six (6) months from the date of issue.

Rotation/Shifts

Days, 8 hour shifts. On-call rotation will be required. For information purposes only - EORLA reserves the right to change.

The Eastern Ontario Regional Laboratory Association (EORLA) is a member-owned, non-profit organization encompassing the operation of 19 licensed, acute-care, hospital-based clinical laboratories that service clinical programs across the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (CLHIN) of Eastern Ontario A leading, innovative model of integrated laboratory practices in the province, the purpose of EORLA is to deliver patient-focused, consistent, high-quality and cost-effective hospital-based laboratory services to meet the needs of the region's patients.

EORLA laboratories provide diagnostic testing to both hospital inpatients and registered outpatients, performing a total of approximately 12 million tests annually. Comprehensive testing in the disciplines of Anatomic Pathology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Transfusion Medicine, Hematopathology, and Microbiology/Virology is performed.

All EORLA laboratories are accredited by Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) and The Ottawa Hospital Tissue Typing Laboratory is accredited by the American Society for Histocompatability and Immunogenetics (ASHI).

Laboratory staff includes over 800 Medical Laboratory Technologists and Medical Laboratory Assistants along with approximately 65 Medical/Scientific staff.
