Working for the Department of Pediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta is one of Canada’s leading academic health centres for pediatric specialty and subspecialty education and research. Working closely with the Stollery Children’s Hospital and community pediatrics in Northern Alberta, we are committed to meeting the unique needs of our community and providing exceptional care for infants, children, youth, and families. Position Summary
The primary role of the Laboratory Coordinator will be to manage the daily operations of a research lab focused on translational research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric neuro-oncology patients. Working under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the key responsibilities will include developing and conducting experiments, overseeing laboratory personnel, supporting grant and manuscript preparation, and managing the procurement and maintenance of lab equipment. This position will also support students and research assistants working within the research team and facilitate the close-out of projects. The Lab Coordinator will provide both study and administrative support to the entire research team.
Duties
- Develop and conduct experiments, review and validate research data, troubleshoot erroneous data, and procure external controls for experiment validation and quality control
- Manage project-related correspondence and coordinate with team members and partner organizations
- Ensure adherence to all safety and certification requirements as mandated by Environmental Health and Safety, Culture of Care and lab safety including WHMIS. Orient any outside personnel to lab equipment
- Provide support to trainees, research fellow, graduate students, with their research activities
- Develops and regularly updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all tasks performed by laboratory staff, as well as for the operation of lab equipment
- Assist Principal Investigator in preparation of grant application including compiling preliminary data, developing budgets, obtaining quotations, and drafting of procedural specifics
- Drafts initial versions of manuscripts for publication, as requested by the Principal Investigator, and prepares abstracts for submission to scientific meetings and conferences.
- Manages the procurement of all laboratory supplies and maintains accurate records of purchases and expenditures
- Oversees routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and coordinates repairs as necessary
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required (in a health sciences related field preferred). Advanced training (Masters degree or PhD) is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated experience working in a research lab environment.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Interpersonal skills, professionalism, and confidentiality
- Strong organizational and time management skill
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with manuscript writing and project coordination considered an asset
- Previous experience working within the field of Pediatric Neuro-oncology would be considered an asset
