About the role

Your Opportunity:

The Clinical Supervisor, Public Health Lab is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and for all leadership aspects of people management in their respective areas. This position reports to the Manager, Public Health Lab. The Supervisor will assist the Manager with the development of project plans and facilitates implementation of approved processes. The Clinical Supervisor, Public Health Lab will oversee the following public health laboratory departments: Environmental Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics located at the Foothills Medical Centre. The Clinical Supervisor supports the vision, mission and strategic business plan of Alberta Public Laboratories (APL) and will develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders which may include leaders at APL, Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health and Alberta Health. Key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to: recruitment and succession planning, staff development, performance management, change management, collective agreement interpretation, financial management, strategic planning and working closely with the manager to provide quality and safety planning for the site. In addition, the supervisor oversees day-to-day operations, quality standards, staff training and competency, assesses resources required to meet demands of increased testing and collaborates with others public health laboratory leaders to maximize resources by sharing ideas and addressing common concerns.

Description:

The Clinical Supervisor oversees and/or assists with departmental orientation for new staff including technical, safety and organizational familiarization. Engages, evaluates and supports the performance of staff, providing commendation and/or correction when required. Participates in discipline, grievances and investigations as required. Communicates regularly and effectively with staff to ensure understanding of policies, processes and expectations. Works with leadership to ensure regular training is completed and tracked as required. Performs advanced problem solving with referral to appropriate level of clinical and technical expertise, identifies trends and patterns, and implements standards practices. Ensures safety processes and procedures are in place and adhered to as well as where appropriate, safety equipment is utilized. Participates as requested in the formation of tactics to support strategy, development or administration of policy and programs which support patient care, including planning done in conjunction with Laboratory Management. Teaches, trains and helps develop the skills of others through coaching and guidance and participation in succession planning strategies. Through interaction with internal and external partners and participants, influences the direction of their area laboratory site initiatives. Develops tactics to support organizational strategy to build and sustain a high performance workforce and foster positive relationships with stakeholders. Ensures regular monitoring and use of fiscal responsibilities of the department. Identifies opportunities for improving effectiveness, performance and productivity by gathering, preparing and reviewing reports and non-conforming event data.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of formal education in a laboratory health care discipline (Medical Laboratory Technologist, Combined Lab/X-Ray Technologist). 3-5 years’ experience in a supervisory or leadership role, and demonstrated, conflict resolution and/or change management skills. Relevant experience in a health care and/or laboratory setting. Demonstrated engagement of team members supplemented by strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Excellent organizational skills and ability to complete tasks accurately within a varied, dynamic environment. Demonstrated ability to build, foster and maintain professional relationships.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Preferred Qualifications:

Recent previous experience in a technical leadership role. Experience with specialized microbiology and molecular testing. Experience with quality accreditations, in particular preparation for internal and external auditing. Familiar with the Human Pathogen and Toxins Act (HPTA) program components.
