Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Shifts: Monday to Friday

Status: Temporary Full-Time (1 year contract, with possibility for extension)

The Health Systems and Policy Research Collaborative Centre at the University Health Network (UHN) is seeking a highly motivated and strategically minded Scientific Associate to join our newly established and dynamic Centre. The Scientific Associate will play a hybrid role that combines scientific expertise with strategic engagement, serving as an internal and external consultant to help advance the Centre’s mission. The incumbent will lead the design and execution of health systems and policy research projects while also spearheading new research opportunities and partnerships that support the growth, sustainability, and strategic goals of the Centre. This position is ideal for a candidate with a strong research background and a passion for building collaborations that drive impact across the health system.

The Health Systems and Policy Research Collaborative Centre was established as part of UHN’s commitment to fostering collaboration across high-priority health systems research areas, empowering teams to address complex health challenges, and strengthening UHN’s leadership and partnerships in these fields. Its mission is to build an inclusive and collaborative research community across UHN, while developing strong partnerships to support the translation of research into evidence-informed policies and practices that drive meaningful and lasting health system transformation.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities Lead the Design, Development, and Implementation of Scientific Research Projects in Health Systems and Policy

  • Design, develop, and implement scientific research projects and protocols across key areas of health systems and policy research (e.g., health technology assessment, economic evaluation, implementation science, policy, etc).
  • Assess the feasibility and application of a broad range of scientific methods and research principles under the guidance of the Centre Chair and affiliated Scientists.
  • Apply research principles and techniques including study design, data management, quality assurance, statistical analysis and interpret and summarize research findings of large health administrative data sets.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and present results at scientific conferences and stakeholder meetings.
  • Develop reports and lead or facilitate presentations and workshops across academic and partner sites.

Support business development by identifying and managing strategic partnerships, pursuing new research opportunities (including grant applications), and contributing to the Centre’s growth and revenue generation.

  • Identify and pursue new business and research development opportunities with initial focus on Ontario and Canada.
  • Develop strong relationships with stakeholders, including but not limited to UHN foundations, other foundations, funding agencies, provincial and federal government, and industry.
  • Act as the scientific lead in early-stage project discussions, helping scope proposals and ensure scientific alignment with client and partner priorities.
  • Build a robust network of collaborators to support growth areas for the Collaborative Centre’s portfolio.
  • Act as an internal and external consultant on research and strategy initiatives aligned with the Centre’s vision.
  • Lead the development of grant applications and RFPs, including identification of opportunities, proposal writing, ensuring compliance with grant guidelines, coordination, and submission.
  • Conduct special projects that support the Centre’s strategic objectives, including market scanning, trend analysis, and business case development.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Health Systems and Policy Research or a related discipline (e.g., Health Technology Assessment, Health Economics, Outcomes Research, Implementation Science).
  • Minimum requirement of 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education (MSc) and 5+ years of relevant experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: health technology assessment, economic evaluations, outcomes research implementation science, or policy analysis.
  • Knowledge of both research and business development processes is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with quantitative and qualitative analysis tools (e.g., R, Python, NVivo, etc).
  • Proven track record of research leadership, including peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across interdisciplinary teams and with external partners.
