About the role
The Position
Health Care Aides support the specialized health needs of students, working closely with teachers, clinicians and the student services team. Responsibilities include assisting with student health care tasks to ensure students' well being engagement in school activities. The role will involve collaboration with educational staff and responding to individual healthcare plans with the school settings.
Health Care Aides support students' physical, social, academic and behavioral well-being. They introduce, reinforce and model life skills and positive behavior. They also assist in delivering structural programming to implement strategies for student growth and development and provide care and supervision of students in various environments.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist students with personal care and medical needs such as suctioning, feeding, grooming, hygiene and lifts and transfers.
- Support the assigned student in educational activities as outlined by the student services team including providing explanations, demonstration and assistance with classroom tasks.
- Assist in implementing the assigned students' specific plan and or individualized educational plan ensuring that they are followed during class time and other activities.
- Encourage student participation, promote independence and help the student navigate transitions during the school day,
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to monitor and report on students' progress both academically and behaviorally.
- Report changes to the student services team.
- Implement emergency first aid in response to injury or health crisis with a scope of training.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of healthcare equipment and supplies.
- Provide support for students' physical exercises routine including the supervised supervision and participation in leisure activities.
- Work closely with teachers, administrators and clinicians to develop and implement student care and education plans.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all student health academic and behavioral information.
- Keep up to date with documentation.
- Participate in relevant training (e.g. CPR, First Aid, NCI) to stay current with healthcare techniques and safety protocols.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completion of a Health Care Aid certificate or similar qualifications is required.
- Completion of specialized courses such as CPR, NCI and First Aide is preferred.
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector and a clear Child Abuse Registry.
- Completion of Respect in School training as mandated by the Province of Manitoba.
- Three to five years experience working with children in a health care or educational setting is considered an asset.
- Valid class 5 driver’s license.
