Role Description
We are seeking a Senior Socio-economic Specialist & Team Lead to join our growing team. Reporting to the Director, Human Environment, the Senior Socio-economic Specialist will be responsible for contributing to a range of socio-economic and related services for our diverse client base, informed by both Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and western science.
In addition, the Senior Socio-economic Specialist will act as a Team Lead and manage an assigned team of professionals to support engagement, performance, and resource planning for their service area. Teams range from 4-7 direct reports and share the same primary technical service area as their Team Lead. In collaboration with the Technical Lead, Socio-economics, the Team Lead will provide guidance and mentorship to team members.
What You'll Do
Senior Socio-economic Specialist responsibilities (70%):
- Lead the authorship of socio-economic technical reporting for effects (impact) assessments under project review processes.
- Lead socio-economic scopes of work related to (for example) land use, marine use, community services and infrastructure, transportation, housing, community health and well-being, and economy and employment.
- Provide socio-economic related advice to clients and staff during all stages of the project life cycle, including planning and feasibility, impact assessment, and post-impact assessment permitting and compliance.
- Act as a Discipline Lead on socio-economic scopes of work such as land use, marine use, community services and infrastructure, transportation, housing, health and well-being, and economy and employment.
- Conduct thorough technical and quality reviews for project deliverables.
- Develop and provide guidance and training to TWC team members on socio-economic methods, impact assessment and cumulative effects assessment methods.
- Stay informed on industry trends, academic initiatives, and legislative changes to ensure our practices are current and effective.
Team Lead responsibilities (20%):
- Manage team resourcing through approving time off schedules and timesheets.
- Conduct team members' Annual Review and regular continuous feedback sessions.
- Monitor utilization levels and resolve utilization issues in collaboration with Project Managers and the Business Line Director.
- Guide team members in administrative, interpersonal, and professional development items.
Business and professional development (10%):
- Participate in client outreach, identifying and engaging with clients and prospects to promote our services.
- Lead or participate in the creation of technical approaches for proposals.
- Participate in relevant professional associations and represent TWC at events and conferences to enhance our technical reputation.
Other duties as may be required.
Qualifications
- A graduate degree in geography, environmental sciences/studies, natural resource management, ecology, political science, sociology or equivalent authorship experience in a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive experience, focused on professional consulting and other related experience.
- Demonstrated professional experience with one or more socio-economic topics in an impact assessment or related context (such as economics, land and resource use, community services and infrastructure, community health).
- Knowledge of Canadian federal, territorial, and provincial legislation regarding impact assessment, consultation, and permitting, based on professional experience.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to motivate individuals with a variety of communication approaches.
- Previous experience managing teams in a professional setting is required.
- Experience working with environmental discipline leads and other subject matter experts on large complex projects is an asset.
- Experience working with proponents, regulators, and First Nations, Métis and Inuit on large complex projects is an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
- A motivated, positive team player, who thrives in collaborative environments and is equally capable of working independently under deadlines.
- Indigenous lived experience is an asset.
