Finance Department

THE ROLE

The Fort McKay First Nation is seeking an organized individual with strong attention to detail to fill the Payroll Coordinator position. The Payroll Coordinator is responsible for processing hourly and salary payroll while ensuring compliance with company policies and government regulations. This position involves handling employee payroll records, calculating wages, processing deductions, and resolving payroll-related inquiries. This is a full-time permanent position, located in Fort McKay, AB and is based on seventy-five (75) hours bi-weekly.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain and update employee information, such as records of employee attendance, leave and overtime, to calculate pay, and benefit entitlements using manual or computerized systems
  • Prepare and verify statements of earnings for employees, indicating gross and net salaries and deductions such as taxes, garnishments and insurance and pension plans
  • Prepare, verify and process all employee payroll related payments, including regular pay, benefit payments, and special payments such as bonuses and vacation pay
  • Complete, verify and process forms and documentation for administration of benefits such as pension plans, leaves, share savings, employment and medical insurance
  • Prepare payroll related filings and supporting documentation, such as year-end tax statements, pension, Records of Employment and other statements
  • Provide information on payroll matters, benefit plans and collective agreement provisions
  • Compile, review, and monitor statistical reports, statements, and summaries related to pay and benefits accounts
  • Prepare and balance period-end reports and reconcile issued payrolls to bank statements
  • Identify and resolve payroll discrepancies
  • May be responsible for the development or implementation of payroll policies, procedures or processes.
  • Generate record of employment (ROE) and T4s.
  • Perform other duties as required.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.

  • 2-3 years of experience in payroll processing or a similar role.

  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.

  • Proficiency in payroll software Sage 300 Canadian Payroll (e.g., Worklinks BambooHR, etc.).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other office software.

  • Strong knowledge of payroll regulations and tax laws.

  • Payroll designations ((PCP, PLP) are considered an asset

  • Experience working in an Indigenous community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is considered an asset

  • Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract is required

  • Clean Criminal Record Check is required
