Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Position Status: Full-time (40 hours/week), One year Contract

The Opportunity

Rupertsland Institute is recruiting for an AI and Data Governance Specialist to support Rupertsland Institute’s organizational transformation under the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the successful candidate will develop strategies, access data readiness, and support the implementation of AI tools that enhance program delivery and Métis citizen services. The AI and Data Governance specialist will also lead the ethical integration of AI technologies and data governance frameworks that support the transformation while upholding indigenous data sovereignty. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual with collaborative, analytical, and community focused, bringing a strong understanding of Indigenous values, a deep knowledge of AI and data systems, and a passion for responsible digital innovation in support of the Métis communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an organization-wide AI and data governance strategy aligned with RLI’s goals and transformation.
  • Create and promote data governance frameworks rooted in Indigenous data sovereignty and responsible data stewardship.
  • Lead the identification, assessment, and integration of AI technologies to improve operations and Métis citizen services.
  • Conduct data and process readiness reviews to ensure ethical AI adoption and compliance with privacy regulations and governance policies.
  • Collaborate with internal program teams to explore AI-driven solutions that support education, employment, community well-being, and workforce development.
  • Design, prototype, and support deployment of AI tools including but not limited to machine learning, NLP, computer vision.
  • Work with the Data Systems team to standardize data practices and ensure consistency and security across departments.
  • Develop internal policies and training for ethical data collection, storage, access, and sharing
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to staff on AI/data projects to build internal capacity and understanding.
  • Deliver accessible, community-friendly presentations and reports on AI and data strategies
  • Stay informed on AI, cybersecurity, and data governance advancements relevant to Indigenous organizations.
  • Advocate for ethical and inclusive AI tools to help bridge service gaps in under-resourced communities.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strategic thinker with a community-first approach, grounded in cultural respect and a commitment to equity and responsible innovation.

  • Deep understanding of data governance principles, ethical technology practices, and indigenous data sovereignty.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and systems-thinking skills, with the ability to apply complex technological concepts in plain language for diverse audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in indigenous, rural, or community-based technological settings, building inclusive partnerships across internal and external stakeholders.

  • Adaptable and comfortable with innovation in evolving fields.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and be adaptable and flexible to changing priorities.

  • Strong sense of ethics and the ability to handle and maintain confidentiality for sensitive or private information. Adherence to privacy legislation and governance frameworks.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

  • Strong sense of cultural and political sensitivity and awareness, with a genuine interest and respect for a diversity of people.

  • Familiarity with Indigenous data sovereignty, ethical AI, and inclusive tech design is a strong asset

  • Experience working in Indigenous, rural, or community-based technology settings is an asset

Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field

  • Demonstrated education or specialization in AI, data governance, or machine learning

  • Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in AI implementation, systems analysis, or organizational data governance

  • Experience in Project management and stakeholder consultation.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to work a regular schedule of 8:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required.

  • Ability to travel throughout Alberta, as required.

  • Reliable transportation to and from the office.

  • Submission of a clear Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check.
