The City of Abbotsford is offering an incredible opportunity for a highly motivated, knowledgeable energy and climate action professional to join our team as Senior Energy & Climate Action Manager. This permanent role leads the City’s implementation of strategic goals related to climate change mitigation and adaptation in both the corporate and community portfolios.
As a key member of the Engineering & Regional Utilities leadership team reporting to the Director, Environmental Services and working across all departments and with multiple external stakeholders (e.g., senior levels of governments, BC Hydro, FortisBC, local government networks, social service organizations, etc.), the Senior Energy & Climate Action Manager is responsible for developing and implementing strategic direction in all City matters related to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and supporting community resilience to climate change. The incumbent provides expertise and strategic advice on climate and energy issues in both the corporate and community realms; develops, recommends and implements policies; advises senior leadership and Council on these issues; ensures climate action activities are in alignment with the City’s strategic priorities; and develops revenue-generating scenarios to ensure the portfolio is pursued in a fiscally responsible manner. The incumbent manages a specialized team that implements corporate and community-wide mitigation and adaptation projects and programs. The Senior Energy & Climate Action Manager also advises on and ensures successful delivery of high-profile capital projects.
Essential abilities to be successful in this position include: ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with staff, energy utilities, all levels of government, and other partner organizations; and ability lead the Energy & Climate Action staff team and advise and support project teams in delivering complex capital projects. Experience in community and corporate policy in a local government setting is required.
The successful candidate will possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Planning, Environmental Sustainability or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressively professional related experience is desired, including sound knowledge of the delivery of energy and climate action initiatives, strategic energy management projects, and budget planning and control, preferably in a unionized environment.
