Legal Assistant
Top Benefits
About the role
We are a full-service law firm based in Victoria, B.C and a practice that reaches across all of B.C.
We are recruiting a full-time, long term legal assistant who, we hope, will grow alongside us in the coming years as a core and deeply valued member of our team. We are looking for someone who is, or wants to be, a career legal assistant or paralegal.
Our new teammate will be starting in a junior role, reporting to our senior legal assistant, and will have lots of opportunity to learn our systems and procedures, ask questions, and grow into an expanded role.
The most important thing to us about our future assistant is that they understand that they will be our face to our clients, providing the first impression of our firm. They need to be a people-person and will already have some experience in a customer service role. They behave appropriately with clients and other lawyers, and they speak confidently and eloquently on the phone and in written correspondence with the outside world; they have an absolute command of the English language. The right person for this role will be respectful, fun, curious, positive, and is someone who takes initiative to find answers and solutions, but who isn’t afraid to ask questions or ask for help when stuck. Our future colleague can expect to be treated with respect and dignity.
Our firm is 99% paperless, modern, and down to earth. This means it is essential that our new team member have excellent computer skills, and be totally comfortable with modern technology, including answering and operating virtual phones, scanning documents, using e-mail to review incoming and outgoing e-mails and filing documents in our cloud-based document management system. They will also need to be comfy interacting with other team members using instant messenger programs, email, Zoom and anything else we discover from time to time. They're familiar working with PDFs using Adobe, and with using Microsoft Office, including proper use of headings and numbering, etc. While we can provide training on the more advanced features and programs, we do need our new team member to be comfortable working with and formatting documents properly as a starting point. We use exclusively Mac machines at our firm, so comfort with using Macs is important.
Our ideal team member is okay with some good-natured swearing around the office, and with lawyers both excitedly chatting about, and sometimes complaining about, our files, lawyers and/or the justice system in general, in their presence. Our future colleague understands that our legal team sometimes deals with sad or difficult, very rarely even disturbing, legal matters, and this means occasionally being exposed to some sad or difficult phone calls or emails from or to our clients.
Please send us a cover letter and resume that together demonstrate your command of Microsoft Word, the English language, that highlight clearly how your skills and/or experience fit our needs as set out in this posting, and that also show us your personality!
