About the role

Join Beacon Community Services as a Trucking Assistant at Thrift on Fourth in Sidney, BC. This is a hands-on, service-oriented position supporting the daily operations of our thrift shop. You’ll work alongside the Delivery Driver and Shop Manager to ensure safe and efficient transportation of donated items, excellent customer support, and a positive experience for shoppers and donors alike. Days/Hours of Work: Tuesday – Friday / 8:30 am to 5:00 pm (32 hours per week)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Thrift on Fourth Manager, the Trucking Assistant works with the Manager and Delivery Driver to provide efficient and courteous pick-up and delivery of furniture and other items. The Trucking Assistant also assists the Thrift Manager, customers and volunteers in a variety of tasks, including moving items in the shop, placing sold items in customers’ vehicles, and providing customer service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure that proper footwear is worn – steel-toed shoes, safety vest at the landfill and when directing the truck on pickups and deliveries
  • Assist in transporting items, including furniture, between Thrift Shops and perform pickups and deliveries for Thrift on Fourth in Sidney, BC
  • Ensure that safe and proper lifting techniques are utilized when lifting items.
  • Assist the truck driver with navigation as needed.
  • Move larger items such as furniture at or within the Thrift Shops as per the Thrift Shop Manager’s request.
  • At the completion of the trucking day, assist with the depot – garbage hauling, cardboard breakdown, sorting items, accepting incoming donations, and transporting items as needed between thrift shops.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Thrift Manager.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in a customer service environment
  • Grade 12 or equivalent work experience
  • Driver’s license Class 5 is an asset but not necessary
  • Experience working with delivery tools such as dollies and safe lifting techniques
  • Physically able to carry out the duties of the position, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • First Aid Certification is an asset

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with customers, co-workers and volunteers
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Ability to promote a positive team environment.
