Position Summary
Reporting to the Education Program Coordinator, the Specialized Instructor III, will provide high quality instruction to participants in a specialized recreation program. Participants may range in age from preschoolers to older adults. The Specialized Instructor will prepare a course outline and implement age-appropriate activities, ensure participant safety and engagement, follow policies and procedures, and work effectively with the Education Program Coordinator.
Disciplines: Computers, Wellness Workshops, Tai chi, Qi gong, Martial Arts, Kickboxing, Hiking, Adult Cooking Programs
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, organize and deliver high quality and stimulating lessons for all levels of participants
- Keep current with industry trends
- Actively engage participants
- With the assistance of the integration team, modify activities to ensure participants with disabilities are able to participate in programs and be fully integrated into the program setting.
- Ensure there are a variety of activities in the program related to the type of activity being taught.
- Ensure participant safety and security throughout the program
- Communicate and interact with participants and make everyone feel welcome
- Report to work in sufficient time to ensure the program is ready to start on time
- Provide a list of supplies/equipment and set up needs required for the program to the Education Program Coordinator
- Supervise all aspects of the program including participants and volunteers.
- Complete and submit all necessary paperwork in a timely manner (e.g. attendance records, drop in sheets, list of hours worked, etc.
- Assist the Education Program Coordinator with delivering program evaluations to participants
- With the assistance of the integration team, modify activities to ensure participants with disabilities are able to participate in programs and be fully integrated into the program setting.
- Wear assigned uniform/name tag
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and training sessions prior to, during and outside regular programming hours.
- Maintain excellent public relations at all times.
- Maintain good communication with staff and volunteers, facility users, and the Education Program Coordinator.
- Understand and implement the policies and procedures of the Facility(s), and of the Community Services Department.
- Represent the City of Richmond Hill in a cooperative, organized, enthusiastic and well-groomed manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- Must possess advanced certification or technical training in the activity being taught or Certification by accredited organization in field of discipline
- High Five PHCD Certification is required if working with participants ages 6 – 12 years
- Emergency First Aid and CPR-B
- Minimum 2 years related experience
Required Skills/Knowledge
- Excellent organization and communication skills.
- Good time management skills.
- Ability to provide First Aid at the Emergency First Aid Standard.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Requires satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check
- Demonstrates good judgment and makes sound decisions
- Shows commitment to personal growth, development, and leadership opportunities
- Shares new ideas and challenges the status quo
- Proven written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with honesty, openness, respect, and trust
