The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).

Position summary

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (The Institute), an international research powerhouse with a worldwide reputation in biomedical sciences and health care, is looking for a Human Resources Advisor to join its dynamic team.

The incumbent provides strategic and operational guidance to researchers and managers at The Institute on human resources matters related to the operations of their laboratory or division. They act as a trusted partner by actively supporting them in managing employee relations, including disciplinary files, performance issues, complaints, and complex situations involving staff. The incumbent works closely with stakeholders to develop, implement, and optimize HR programs and processes tailored to operational realities.

General Duties

Reporting to the Human Resources Supervisor, the incumbent’s main responsibilities include:

• Providing advice, coaching, and guidance to researchers and managers on a wide range of HR matters, including employee relations, performance management, talent acquisition, compensation and benefits, absence and disability management, change management, employee retention, and legal and procedural compliance.

• Coaching and advising managers and employees to ensure effective and efficient issue resolution.

• Partnering with researchers and managers to foster a high-performance culture by implementing improvement strategies for underperforming employees.

• Assisting researchers, employees, and research trainees with work and study permit applications and related inquiries.

• Managing some employee leaves, including disability, work-related injuries, and personal leaves, advising researchers and managers on return-to-work strategies and best practices.

• Participating in the development, facilitation, and implementation of HR projects and programs, including HR automation initiatives.

• Collaborating with researchers and managers to implement innovative HR practices that align with laboratory/division needs and objectives.

• Developing, coordinating, and delivering training sessions and presentations on HR topics for The Institute community.

• Making salary recommendations for new hires, positioning adjustments, etc.

• Contributing to continuous improvement and best practices by updating and creating HR procedures, internal training manuals, and relevant documentation, in collaboration with the Human Resources Specialist, Operations and Compensation.

• Staying informed about industry trends and best practices to enhance HR strategies and support program development.

Education / Experience

Education: Bachelor's Degree

Field of Study: Human Resources, Industrial Relations, or a related field

Other education considered an asset for this position:

Work Experience: Five (5) years of experience in Human Resources including employee relations
