About the role

Canada’s Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI) is a national, independent and not-for-profit organization that helps resolve and reduce disputes between consumers and financial services firms in both official languages. OBSI is responsive to consumer inquiries, conducts fair and accessible investigations of unresolved disputes, and shares its knowledge and expertise with the stakeholders and the public. If a consumer has a complaint against an OBSI participating bank or investment firm that they are not able to resolve with the bank or firm, OBSI will investigate at no cost to the consumer. Where a complaint has merit, OBSI may recommend compensation up to a maximum of $350,000.

Job Title: Investment & Business Intelligence Analyst

Location: Toronto Office

Reporting to: Manager, Investment Analysis

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Investment & Business Intelligence Analyst plays a critical role in the analysis of consumer complaints, which is an integral to achieving fair and reasonable case resolutions. In addition, the Analyst will lead projects related to analyzing organizational and industry data to determine and contribute to the overall efficiency of the organization. The Analyst will:

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis by independently assessing investments and portfolios for security risk profile, asset allocation, churning, over-concentration and inappropriate use of margin
  • Assess investment performance on consumer accounts, specific holdings and strategies, and recommend appropriate benchmarks for performance comparison and financial damage valuation purposes
  • Effectively communicate analysis findings with stakeholders by preparing commentary on portfolios, strategies and individual security analysis including participating in meetings with member firms, consumers and stakeholders as required
  • Conduct mortgage amortization and prepayment penalty calculations, and various interest calculations (such as validating the interest charged on credit cards and lines of credit)
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the Canadian financial services industry, financial solutions and investment products by keeping informed of industry news, trends and developments
  • Apply analytical expertise and use advanced Excel functions and Bloomberg and Refinitiv Eikon data connectivity to develop and maintain analytical tools for equity and fixed income analysis and financial damage valuation
  • As required, develop OBSI’s business intelligence framework, build periodic and ad-hoc reports and draw conclusions and recommendations that facilitate business decisions and communications with OBSI stakeholders
  • Advocate for and contribute to an innovative and continuous improvement culture. The Investment & Business Intelligence will be expected to creatively and positively influence the work we do and take advantage of opportunities as they present themselves, and suggest innovations
  • Complete projects as assigned by the Manager, Investment Analysis and actively participate and contribute to team meetings and team projects

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a University degree in Commerce or Business Administration, with a specialization in Finance
  • Enrollment in the Chartered Financial Analyst program with the completion of level one will be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the capital markets, personal financial planning and financial solutions and investment products
  • Experience analyzing consumer financial data, financial market and third-party statistical data
  • Experience using Bloomberg and Refinitiv Eikon to analyze investment products
  • Experience with prioritizing multiple projects and working in a time sensitive environment
  • Advanced experience with Excel including VBA programming and pivot tables, and experience with databases and data analysis

OBSI is Canada’s trusted independent dispute resolution service for consumers and small businesses with a complaint they can't resolve with their banking services or investment firm. As a free alternative to the legal system, we work informally and confidentially to find fair outcomes to disputes about banking and investment products and services.

OBSI looks into complaints about most banking and investment matters including: mutual funds; bonds and GICs; stocks, exchange traded funds, income trusts and other securities; investment advice; unauthorized trading; fraud; debit and credit cards; mortgages; loans and credit; fees and rates; transaction errors; misrepresentation; and accounts sent to collections.
