About the role

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Medical Device Reprocessing, the Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDRT) performs procedural duties relating to the provision of safe surgical equipment. The MDRT is responsible for the retrieval, disassembly, decontamination, inspection, function testing, assembly, packaging, sterilization, handling, storage and distribution of reprocessed hospital patient care equipment and surgical instrumentation as well as the documentation of all processes. These duties are carried out in adherence to Canadian Standards Association (CSA), manufacturer’s instructions for use (MIFU'S), departmental policies and procedures, departmental Standard Operational Procedures (SOP's) and standards/best practice guidelines for infection prevention and control.

Hours of Work

All shifts as per rotation (24/7 environment).

Your Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Recognized MDR Technician course required. In the event that there are no qualified applicants, the employer may consider applicants who currently do not have the MDR Technician course but the applicant is prepared to enroll in the course as a condition of hire and will complete within 18 months of hire. Applicants internal to IWK Health and the Nova Scotia Council of Health Support Unions will be considered prior to considering externals.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required.
  • Previous sterile processing experience preferred.
  • MDR Certification preferred.
  • Operating Room and/or laparoscopy instrumentation/cidex OPA scope processing experience an asset.
  • Responsible, dependable, able to take initiative, and sound decision-making skills required.
  • Ability to work independently without supervision required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment.
  • Competency in other languages an asset.

Short-listed candidates will be required to complete a written skills testing questionnaire. Short-listed candidates will be contacted by email to arrange this testing and must receive a minimum score of 80% on the test to be eligible to advance to an interview.
