About the role

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Children’s Intensive Service (CIS), and under the direction of the Team Leader, the Masters prepared Social Worker is a member of the interdisciplinary team and provides clinical intervention to families and their children ages 6-12 with severe disruptive behavior. The Social Worker will work with children and families from a multi-systemic framework approach based on attachment principles. This is done in accordance with the mission, philosophies, and vision of IWK Health. Interventions and follow-up may be provided on a direct, consultative or supervisory monitoring approach. The Social Worker is involved in all aspects of the care continuum from pre-assessment through to discharge/follow up and will also provide individual and family therapy. The Social Worker provides leadership and support around the client’s treatment plan, participates in clinical case discussion, team meetings, case conferences, and supports program operations. The Social Worker demonstrates professionalism, adheres to standards of their professional practice and maintains the principles of client and family-centered care. Teaching and clinical supervision of students and in-home support workers is an expectation in the MSW role at CIS.

Clinical services are provided to families in their homes or other community locations whenever possible which will require travel for such visits. In necessary situations there will be an inpatient component to care.

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday: 7.5 hour days, some evening hours may be required. Travel inside and outside of HRM will be required.

Your Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Social Work required.
  • Registered, or eligible to be registered/licensed with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW) required.
  • Minimum two (2) years post masters clinical experience working in child and adolescent mental health services required.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification (NVCI) required.
  • Experience in individual/family therapy required.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivery of evidence-based group interventions.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated experience in case management and community liaison.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated skills in organization and time management.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the child welfare system and knowledge of mental health disorders, including anxiety, mood and disruptive behavior disorders.
  • Must have a valid (Class 5 minimum) Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to reliable transportation for travel.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
