Laboratory staff in the Department of Archaeology support research and teaching through the management of specialized labs, research collections, and instructional spaces. Our team provides technical assistance, safety oversight, and hands-on training to faculty, students, and researchers. We contribute to SFU’s priorities by fostering experiential learning, supporting Indigenous engagement through repatriation work, and maintaining high standards in safety and sustainability. About the Role
The Laboratory Technician plays a key role in supporting the Department of Archaeology’s teaching, research, and community engagement priorities. Working across diverse lab environments, including forensic, isotopic, and geoarchaeology, the Technician ensures the safe operation of equipment, prepares instructional materials, and conserves teaching and research collections. This hands-on role contributes directly to student learning, faculty research, and respectful repatriation practices. Upcoming initiatives include digitizing collections, supporting field school logistics, and enhancing lab safety protocols. The Technician will be part of a collaborative team committed to sustainability, Indigenous partnership, and innovation in archaeological science.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and highly organized, with strong technical skills in archaeological lab and field methods. They have experience with equipment maintenance, safety protocols, and curatorial practices, and are comfortable supporting diverse learners. A collaborative mindset, cultural sensitivity, particularly in working with Indigenous communities, and a commitment to hands-on learning are essential. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to continually learn will ensure success in this dynamic, multifaceted role.
