KEY FUNCTION:
Perform diagnostic imaging procedures using a variety of radiographic equipment to produce high-quality diagnostic images that support accurate diagnosis and excellent patient care. Provide radiology services to a variety of areas within the organization including in-patient units, outpatient services, surgical departments, emergency departments and off-site outpatient clinics.

REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Medical Imaging Radiology.

DUTIES:

  • Ensure the safe and appropriate operation of radiologic equipment (e.g. x-ray machines, portable x-ray devices, c-arms, o-arm and fluoroscopic equipment) according to manufacturer guidelines, hospital policy, college certification and legislative standards.

  • Perform and record routine quality control, troubleshoot equipment and/or procedure issues and contact appropriate service providers to ensure optimal functionality.

  • Document patient medical histories, including any relevant information about previous imaging exams, allergies or surgeries.

  • Position patients and adjust equipment to obtain high quality diagnostic images as directed by the order from the referring practitioner; explain the examination/procedure to patients and their families to ensure ongoing consent, comfort and understanding; monitor throughout.

  • Adhere strictly to radiation protection practices, applicable legislation, clinical standards and department policies and procedures by applying ALARA principles and ensuring proper technical parameters are selected for each procedure.

  • Adhere to the Standards of Practice as outlined by the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO).

  • Maintain competency in the radiology examinations performed and equipment used within the department.

  • Evaluate images for quality and accuracy; repeat or adjust exposures as needed and document.

  • Maintain records and documentation according to department policy and procedures.

  • Collaborate with Radiologists, Physicians, Nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate images are acquired and best possible patient outcomes are achieved.

  • Follow all infection control protocols to maintain a safe and clean environment.

  • Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with healthcare privacy laws.

  • Assist with student education, supervision and evaluations as required.

  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.

  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.

  • Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.

  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.

  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • Minimum of an Advanced Diploma in Radiography, from an accredited college.

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) is required.

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) is preferred.

  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Recent and relevant experience working in Medical Imaging in a hospital or a clinical setting is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of operating diagnostic equipment with strong problem solving skils and ability to handle equipment related challenges.

  • Demonstated knowledge of positioning protocols and standards, with strong attention to detail and ability to ensure high quality images.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform a wide range of diagnostic tests and procedures.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control Practices.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of radiation safety, protocols and protection regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in general health care and community resources.

  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.

  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.

  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Demonstrated effective time management and strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload as required.

  • Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
