About the role

The Opportunity:

Diversify and accelerate your career as a Professional Geotechnical Design Engineer with Canadian Natural’s Albian Geotechnical Design and Reporting Team. The Geotechnical Design and Reporting Team provides in-house technical, professional, and engineering leadership to support mining operations at the Albian Oil Sands asset.

The Geotechnical Design Engineer is responsible for producing design solutions for Mine Earth Structures, including tailings containment dams, pit walls, waste dumps, and other civil infrastructure. This person is expected to progress into the role of Designer of Record and/or Engineer of Record, as described by the Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Directive.

  • Job location: Calgary, Alberta (Travel to the Albian Oil Sands mine site as needed)
  • Shift schedule: 5 days on, 2 days off - Monday to Friday
  • Safety sensitive position: Yes

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead geotechnical engineering designs for mine earth structures, including tailings containment dams, pit walls, waste dumps, and other civil infrastructure
  • Complete or supervise geotechnical design tasks, including design basis preparation, site characterization, numerical modelling and analysis, drafting, and report preparation
  • Support the planning and execution of geotechnical drilling programs
  • Complete regular inspections of operating and under construction structures
  • Act as the geotechnical engineering design focal, or take the role of the Designer of Record, for the assigned mine structures
  • Work with the Engineer of Record to support construction execution and performance monitoring
  • Support development of mine and business plans by providing geotechnical criteria, guidance, and support
  • Prepare geotechnical engineering documents to support submissions for regulatory authorizations
  • Contribute to the preparation of Annual Performance Review Reports
  • Contribute to work standards, procedures, and guidelines for the Albian Dam Safety Management Systems and governance programs

What You Bring to the Role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geological Engineering; Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred
  • Registered or eligible for registration with APEGA is required
  • 10+ years of design and construction experience in operational or consulting environment; Experience in design of tailings containment structures preferred
  • Highly capable with Microsoft Office tools, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, GeoStudio, and other geotechnical engineering design or analysis software
