Main Responsibilities The purpose of the Casual Custodian position is to support school operations and ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained school environment for all students, staff, and visitors.
- Daily regular cleaning of assigned area(s) including but not limited to floors, furniture, washrooms, windows, and other surfaces to maintain a hygienic and safe environment using appropriate equipment (i.e. floor cleaner, mops, vacuums, disinfectants) and following established cleaning protocols.
- Collect and dispose of garbage, recycling, and compost to prevent pest infestations and maintain cleanliness using bins, and dumpsters.
- Opens, closes, and secures board buildings by locking doors/windows and setting/disarming alarms to protect property and ensure safety using key systems and alarm panels under requirements of Safe Schools procedures
- Support after-hours school community permit use by setting up and dismantling rooms for events by arranging tables, chairs, and equipment to accommodate school and community functions as per permit terms and conditions.
- Maintain school grounds by removing snow and ice, sanding walkways, and tending to gardens by using appropriate equipment (i.e. snow blowers, shovels, salt, gardening tools) ensuring safe and accessible outdoor areas.
- Clean school yards to remove hazardous materials using appropriate disposal tools and assigned personal protective equipment to ensure outdoor safety as per health and safety procedures.
- Distribute deliveries and ship materials to support school operations.
- Perform minor repairs such as changing lightbulbs, tightening screws, and touching up paint to maintain facility functionality using appropriate tools and supplies as per custodial procedures. Refer more significant repairs to maintenance services.
- Maintain custodial equipment by performing routine checks and minor repairs to ensure operational readiness.
- Assist maintenance staff with custodial related tasks to support larger repairs and upkeep projects as directed by supervisor.
- Explain and exchange information with external contacts to assist with facilitating building maintenance and inspections.
- Flush water systems and log results to ensure safe drinking water for students and complete computer logs in compliance with ministry and board requirements.
- Update and check emails to stay informed with department notifications and directives using a computer and board email system
- Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Manager, and/or Head Custodian in consultation with school administration.

Mandatory Minimum Qualifications
- Completed Secondary School Diploma or equivalent years of experience.
- Minimum of six (6) months of cleaning experience with demonstrated skill and knowledge in custodial practices and equipment.

- Frequent exposure to cleaning agents, dust, allergens, and/or bodily fluids.
- Variable temperatures due to transitions between indoor and outdoor tasks, and seasonal weather conditions.
