Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

The Life Skills Counsellor provides support to program participants within established policies and procedures including: Employment Standards, Collective Agreements, payroll procedures, Salvation Army Accreditation, and Services and Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, 2008 (SIPDDA).

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Service

  • Establish and maintain purposeful, effective and appropriate professional counselling relationships
  • Provide crisis intervention, supportive counselling and advocacy when
  • required
  • Receiving input from the members to plan activities, groups and outings
  • Being responsible for facilitating and supervising activities such as games, cooking, arts and crafts and sports
  • Encouraging active participation of the membership by participating alongside members
  • Being responsible for outreach to potential members and current members to encourage participation
  • Instruct and supervise clients in performing work activities on assigned assembly lines within the workshop / workfloor
  • Assign clients to work activities based on the production need and on their individual functioning level
  • Ensure Quality and production on the assembly lines, as well as completion of projects on the work floor
  • Ensure the appropriate safety procedures are followed at all times and to assist with all aspects of workplace safety and cleanliness
  • Responsible for supervision of the Workfloor on assigned shifts and to fulfill duties as back-up when another staff is absent
  • Demonstrate acceptable professional behaviour as outlined in the policies and procedures of the Agency and in the Social Work Code of Ethics

Organizational

  • Be involved the Social Recreation Club and the Food Preparation Training Program, grocery shopping, food delivery for Meals that Heal Program
  • Ensure Client work activity on assigned lines meets customer specifications
  • Participate and hold membership in committees and meetings as required
  • Participate constructively and energetically as a responsible team member
  • Be responsible for professional self-development, maintain up to date mandatory training record
  • Have knowledge of Agency philosophy, policy and procedures and to ensure these are upheld

Perform other related duties as required.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:

Governance Boards and Councils:

  • None

MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports to the Program Supervisor
  • No direct reports

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • No expenditure authority

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, for a duration of 8 weeks
  • Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, bodily waste
  • Noise
  • Dealing with angry and abusive people
  • Other dangerous situations
  • Handling garbage
  • Verbal abuse
  • Odours
  • Physical attacks by others (i.e., being attacked by a resident)

  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS, SKILLS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Currently pursuing a related education in post-secondary studies (Social Services, Human Services or Developmental Service Worker).
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Counselling experience in Mental Health, Developmental Challenges or Addictions field is an asset
  • Life Skills Coaching Certificate preferred
  • Ability to model desirable work behaviours
  • Demonstrated documentation skills
  • Ability to successfully complete all mandatory training as required by the agency

Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Experience working with people with mental health challenges and preferably working with individuals who have a dual diagnosis of mental health challenges and developmental disabilities
  • Strong counselling/de-escalation skills is an asset
  • Experience in a Social Services Agency is an asset
  • Training
  • Understanding and support for the Mission of The Salvation Army

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Computer skills including MS Office (Access, Excel, Word, etc.), internet research, invoices and email
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills, leadership skills and a collaborative team approach to create a working climate that is positive and mutually supportive
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt to a fast-changing environment
  • Strong organizational skills, time management skills
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with knowledge of safe operation of machinery and equipment associated with the movement of goods in a warehouse setting
  • The ability to maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information is mandatory
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to treat others with respect, dignity and tact, as well as the ability to care for people with differing abilities
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development
  • Demonstrates relevant understanding of, and compliance with, legislative knowledge of the Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Act, collective agreement and other applicable legislation as required
  • Supports the Vision, Mission and Values of The Salvation Army Broadview Village
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR, Level C
  • Ability to achieve Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate upon hire
  • It is an expectation of the role to be certified in Standard First Aid/ CPR and NCI and use it in practice on a regular basis
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening, completed no less than 2 months prior to date of hire
  • Valid driver’s license an asset, and clean driver’s abstract required
  • Ability to successfully complete all mandatory training as required by the agency
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $17.61 to $22.01 with a maximum of $26.41.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
