The location in Port Alberni, BC is seeking talent to fill the position of Paper Machine Manager.
This job is full-time, permanent.
Job Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Your primary responsibilities in this important position will be to support the manufacturing operations in meeting safety, quality, cost, and productivity objectives. You will achieve these results through your leadership and guidance of the operations and maintenance groups involved in the paper machine.
- Ensure operators have knowledge, experience and procedures to make product safely and efficiently to specification.
- Ensure daily operating plans are communicated and executed.
- Provide troubleshooting expertise.
- Optimize manufacturing processes and recommend equipment and process improvements to achieve manufacturing objectives.
- The Paper Machine Manager is responsible for all aspects of the Paper Machine operation including Safety, Environment, Quality, Production and Costs.
- Demonstrate safety leadership with a goal of zero injuries and environmental leadership with a goal of zero incidents.
- Accountable to report on KPIs and improvement plans monthly and to drive those KPIs and improvement plans through the divisional business process.
- Manage the department to ensure operations are carried out in a safe and efficient manner at minimum cost.
- Assist the Technical, Sales and Marketing organizations in planning the manufacture of paper products.
- Ensure that all paper products meet the applicable grade specifications and customer specific requirements. Ensure that all paper products leaving the mill meet the required standards.
- Direct, through the Mill Shift Supervisors, the continuous operation of the paper machine.
- Review all lost production incidents and complete lost production reports with actions to prevent recurrence where applicable.
- Participate actively in the mill safety programs, including the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC).
- Propose and/or implement new methods, equipment or techniques in keeping with the latest developments.

- Ability to understand requirements and ensure compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.
- Ability to prioritize, make sound decisions, and resolve issues efficiently and effectively.
- Proven analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal, leadership and time management skills.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels within the company.
- Ability to work independently and as a team.
- High degree of collaboration with both Operations and Maintenance personnel.
- Working knowledge of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
- Excellent computer skills.
- Knowledge of papermaking.
Required Professional Experience/Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years experience working in a papermill.
- A proven track record of initiating change, challenging the status quo and ability to act as a change agent.
- Strong management skills to complement strong technical and trouble shooting skills, combined with the ability to communicate effectively.
- A university degree in a related field would be an asset.
Salary $135,000 - $150,000 per annum (Actual salary offered will be commensurate with education, experience, and internal parity).
