Work Term: August 1, 2025 – April 30, 2025
Hours: Flexible scheduling; up to 10–15 hours per month. Writers are expected to work from our on-campus office for a minimum of 6 hours each month.
Compensation: $17–$20/hour, commensurate with experience

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Meliorist is seeking curious, thoughtful, and engaged writers to join our editorial team for the 2025–2026 publishing year. Writers will be responsible for producing assigned articles as well as developing original pieces that reflect the voices, issues, and experiences relevant to the University of Lethbridge and broader community.
Our publication covers a diverse range of content including campus news, arts and culture, science, social issues, and opinion editorials. Writers are expected to maintain a high standard of journalistic integrity, support fact-based reporting, and be open to learning and collaboration. In addition to producing content, writers will actively participate in peer-learning and editing processes to strengthen both individual work and team-wide quality. Training and mentorship opportunities are available.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Research, write, and edit a minimum of two short articles per month
- Conduct interviews, attend events, and gather information through primary and secondary sources
- Submit polished content by assigned deadlines
- Participate in regular staff meetings and editorial planning sessions
- Maintain regular monthly office hours and contribute to team projects
- Communicate consistently with the Editor-in-Chief regarding assignments, progress, and feedback
- Engage in peer learning by reviewing and editing fellow writers’ work, providing constructive feedback
- Represent The Meliorist professionally and respectfully in all events and interactions
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:
- Excellent Written & Verbal Communication: Able to express ideas clearly and compellingly across different formats.
- Research & Analytical Thinking: Strong ability to gather, assess, and synthesize information from multiple sources.
- Curiosity: Eager to explore complex topics, ask questions, and learn from peers and sources.
- Initiative: Self-motivated and able to work well remotely; proactively seeks out stories, pitches ideas, and takes ownership of assigned work.
- Time Management: Consistently meets deadlines and balances multiple writing tasks effectively.
- Adaptability & Receptiveness: Open to editorial feedback and able to revise work based on constructive criticism.
- Resilience & Accountability: Able to bounce back from feedback or edits and meet deadlines consistently.
- Digital Literacy: Comfortable using collaborative tools like Google Workspace, Zoom, etc.
- Cultural Awareness & Sensitivity: Writes with an understanding of diverse perspectives, especially in a multicultural campus setting.
- Professionalism: Maintains ethical standards, respects confidentiality, and handles sensitive topics with care.

The Meliorist (ME-LEE-OR-IST) is the University of Lethbridge’s independent, student-run publication. In print since 1967, the publication showcases the creativity and academic accomplishments of ULeth students through their analyses of current events, arts and culture, and the policies and practices of both the University and its Students’ Union. The publication is guided by the philosophy of Meliorism, which holds that humans can make the world a better place through intentional action.
